Heavy-duty covered parking for commercial and industrial sites
A parking garage shed for a logistics yard, a factory or a dealership stockyard is a bigger, tougher version of a car shade. Longer spans, higher clearances, heavier steel — and often more than one job under the same roof.
Bigger everything
Longer spans so forklift and reversing routes stay clear of columns. Clearances of 3.5 to 4.5 m for LCVs and material handlers. Heavier sections and footings, because a tall open shed attracts higher wind loads and takes knocks in a working yard.
More than parking
Parking bays, a covered loading and unloading zone, and a marshalling area can all sit under one continuous roof instead of three separate structures.
A frame built for work
Thicker steel, generous hot-dip galvanising, and connections detailed for repeated impact and vibration rather than a quiet residential car park.
Built to grow
Multi-bay grids over large areas, with bolted connections so bays can be added as the operation expands — see modular tensile structures.
Typical sites: logistics and transport yards, factory staff and visitor parking, dealership stockyards, bus depots. Related: vehicle parking structures, covered car parking, fabric buildings. Send your yard plan.
Parking-garage shed layouts
A parking-garage shed is defined by what it fixes to. On a rooftop deck the loads have to be carried by the structure below; a free-standing shed carries its own.
Rooftop / top-deck cover
A tensile roof over the exposed top level of a multi-storey car park, carried on new columns tied into the deck structure below.
Free-standing garage shed
A standalone carport-style shed on its own footings, for a home, a villa or a small commercial site.
Podium-level canopy
Cover over a podium or stilt-level parking, fixed back to the building frame.
Ramp & entry canopy
A canopy over the ramp or the entry apron of a parking garage, keeping the transition dry.
For open ground-level parking, see car parking tensile shades and covered car parking.
What is specified on a parking-garage shed
On a rooftop the design starts with the existing structure; on a free-standing shed it starts with the ground.
| Element | Options |
|---|---|
| Structure | Rooftop cover tied to the deck, free-standing garage shed, podium canopy, or ramp canopy |
| Support | New columns onto the deck structure below (checked for the added load), or isolated footings for a free-standing shed |
| Membrane | PVC-coated polyester for most work; PVDF for a longer-lasting finish |
| Frame | Galvanised steel, kept light where it loads an existing deck |
| Drainage | Tied into the building’s existing rainwater system on a rooftop; to gutters and footings on a free-standing shed |
| Clear height | Set from the vehicles and any deck-level headroom limits |
| Foundations / fixings | Deck fixings designed with the building’s structural engineer, or footings to IS 456 for a free-standing shed |
| Scope | Survey, 3D design, fabrication, installation and tensioning — one in-house team |
Membrane figures are manufacturer values for the material type — see the membrane materials page.
Membrane options
Parking-garage sheds use PVC or PVDF. On a rooftop a lighter membrane and frame keep the added load on the existing deck to a minimum.
PVC-coated polyester
The most economical choice and the widest colour range; blocks the rain, hail and almost all UV. PVC fabric →
PVDF-lacquered PVC
The same base with a tougher top-coat that stays cleaner under dust and pollution. PVDF fabric →
PTFE-coated glass
Non-combustible and near self-cleaning, with the longest service life. PTFE fabric →
A full comparison of the fabrics — translucency, fire class, typical life — is on the membrane materials page.
How it is engineered and built
The governing load
On an exposed rooftop the wind exposure is high, so uplift governs strongly. A free-standing shed is designed like any cantilever canopy; a rooftop cover has its column loads and uplift checked back into the building structure with the building’s engineer.
Loading an existing deck
The added dead load and, more importantly, the wind uplift from a rooftop canopy are worked back into the deck and its supports — a coordination step done before anything is fixed down.
Steel & foundations to code
The frame is designed to IS 800 and the footings to IS 456, checked for uplift and overturning. Galvanising to IS 4759 / IS 2629 for corrosion protection.
Built off-site, raised fast
Steel is cut, welded and galvanised in the workshop and the membrane is cut and welded into panels, while the footings are cast on site. On-site work is then quick and low-disruption.
One accountable team
Survey, 3D design, fabrication, installation and tensioning are all Ekra Decor’s own team, with a handover pack of drawings, load report, stability certificate and material certificates.
What drives the cost
Cost is not a fixed rate per square foot — two structures of the same size can differ widely. The main factors:
Rooftop work carries an access and coordination cost that a ground-level canopy does not. Send your site for a design direction and an itemised quote; see the cost guide.
Looking after the structure
- Cleaning — a periodic wash; PVDF surfaces largely self-clean in rain, plain PVC benefits from an occasional wipe-down of dust and tree debris.
- Membrane check — look over the fabric and seams for abrasion or lifting, especially at the edge cables and the corners.
- Cable tension — a first re-tension after the initial season, then a periodic check.
- Drainage — clear the edge gutters, valley gutters and column downpipes of leaves before the monsoon.
- Steel & bolts — inspect the galvanising and the connections, particularly at ground level.

Parking garage shed FAQ
The questions people ask about rooftop parking canopies and garage sheds.
A tensile roof over parking that is either on a structure — the exposed top deck of a multi-storey car park, a podium level — or a standalone carport-style shed for a home or small site.
Yes. New columns are set on the deck and tied into the structure below, which is checked with the building’s engineer for the added load and, more importantly, the wind uplift.
A tensile roof is very light. The governing concern is usually the wind uplift at the new column bases, not the dead weight — both are worked back into the deck before anything is fixed.
It carries its own load on isolated footings and is designed like any cantilever car canopy — no coordination with an existing structure.
The canopy drains into the building’s existing rainwater system; a free-standing shed drains to its own gutters and the ground.
PVC-coated polyester for most projects, PVDF for a longer-lasting finish. On a rooftop a lighter membrane keeps the load on the deck down.
There is no fixed rate. A rooftop canopy carries extra access, craneage and coordination cost over a ground-level one. Send your site for an itemised quote.
Periodic cleaning, a membrane and cable check, a first re-tension after the initial season, and clearing the drainage before the monsoon.
