Overview

Why a tensile structure in Guwahati

Guwahati is the commercial and administrative gateway to the north-east, and its tensile-structure demand reflects that: a large and competitive school sector, colleges and universities, government and institutional buildings, the commercial districts of Paltan Bazaar, GS Road and Zoo Road, and the industrial and logistics belt toward the airport and the Brahmaputra Industrial Park.

Ekra Decor has two documented Guwahati projects: an atrium-skylight tensile structure — three faceted tensioned-membrane elements set into a concrete building to bring diffuse daylight into the space below — and about 2,200 m² of tensioned-fabric cover for a large, multi-block Delhi Public School campus in the city.

Guwahati is served from the Delhi NCR base; steel and membrane are fabricated at the workshop and shipped, and the same in-house team installs. For the full technical background, see the tensile structure guide.

Local Climate & Environment

How the local climate shapes the design

Guwahati's two defining constraints are the highest seismic category in India and one of the country's heaviest monsoons. This is general climate information for the area; the wind, rain and snow values used in a structural design come from the site survey and the applicable codes, not from a page like this.

One of India's heaviest monsoons

The Brahmaputra and Barak valleys receive very heavy monsoon rain — well over 2,000 mm a year, more in the surrounding hills — often in prolonged, intense spells. Drainage is sized for that, with a designed overflow route.

Highest seismic category — Zone V

Assam sits in the most severe seismic zone in the country. The frame, its bracing and its foundations are detailed for Zone V, which is a defining constraint on the design.

Pre-monsoon thunderstorms & squalls

March to May bring violent thunderstorms with sharp wind gusts. The structure is engineered for that gust load, not just the steady monsoon wind.

High humidity, warm all year

The valleys are warm and very humid for most of the year. Open, well-ventilated forms and a light membrane keep the space underneath comfortable; the steel is galvanised for the damp air.

Wind uplift under IS 875

Uplift is assessed for the site under IS 875 Part 3, including the thunderstorm-gust case.

Soft valley & alluvial ground

The valley floors are often soft alluvium, so foundations — sometimes piled — are sized from the site's own soil investigation to IS 456.

Local Applications

Tensile structures that make sense in Guwahati

Weighted toward the education, institutional and commercial demand of the gateway city.

School & campus canopies

Assembly, dining and sports-court cover, and covered walkways, for large multi-block campuses — as built for Delhi Public School. Sports-court & assembly covers →

Atrium skylights & interior membranes

Faceted tensioned-membrane skylight elements that bring diffuse daylight deep into a building — as built for the Guwahati atrium. Custom fabric structures →

Covered walkways

Continuous covered routes across campuses and institutions that hold up through a heavy monsoon. Walkway tensile structures →

Commercial & institutional cover

Courtyard roofs, forecourt canopies and entrance structures for the commercial and government sector. Tensile canopy structures →

Industrial & logistics canopies

Covered yards and loading canopies for the airport-road and Brahmaputra Industrial Park belt. Industrial canopies →

Car parking

Cantilever shades over institutional and commercial car parks, with concealed drainage. Car parking tensile shades →

Materials

Membrane choice for the local climate

Heavy rain and high humidity year round point to a fluoropolymer finish and fully galvanised steel.

Usual pick

PVDF-lacquered PVC

The PVDF top-coat resists dust and UV and largely self-cleans in rain — the sensible default for this climate. PVDF fabric →

Economy

PVC-coated polyester

For a short-life, sheltered or budget structure, with more regular cleaning. PVC fabric →

Landmark

PTFE-coated glass

Chemically inert and near self-cleaning — for a permanent or civic structure, or where a non-combustible fire class applies. PTFE fabric →

Inland and non-coastal — standard hot-dip galvanising is adequate for the steel. Full comparison on the membrane materials page.

Design & Engineering

Engineering for local conditions

Points that come up on a Guwahati project. No structural values are quoted here.

  • Site survey & soil investigation — the valley floor is often soft alluvium, so foundations — sometimes piled — are sized from the site's own soil investigation to IS 456.
  • Wind — the plot's exposure and the pre-monsoon thunderstorm-gust case are both assessed under IS 875 Part 3.
  • Drainage — drainage is sized for a very heavy Brahmaputra-valley monsoon, with steep falls, large gutters and a designed overflow route.
  • Seismic Zone V detailing — Assam sits in the most severe seismic category in the country. The frame, its bracing and its foundations are detailed for Zone V, which is the defining constraint on a Guwahati structure.
  • Skylight integration — an atrium skylight like the Guwahati project is detailed for weather-tightness at the concrete interface, condensation control and cleaning access, not just structure.
  • Corrosion protection — the steel is hot-dip galvanised; the coating class is set by the local air.
  • Thermal movement — the seasonal temperature swing is designed into the connections so the membrane never slackens.
  • Off-site fabrication — steel and membrane are cut and made at the workshop and shipped, so the on-site work is assembly and tensioning.

Service Coverage

How Ekra Decor covers Guwahati

For Guwahati, Ekra Decor's service area is the city, the airport-road and Brahmaputra Industrial Park belt, and the wider north-east including the Barak Valley — the same region as its Silchar Airport project. Steel and membrane are fabricated at the Delhi NCR workshop and shipped; the same in-house team surveys and installs on site.

No local office, factory, warehouse or team. Ekra Decor works across India from a single Delhi NCR design, fabrication and installation base — the same in-house team surveys, engineers, fabricates and installs every project, Guwahati included.

Why Ekra Decor

One in-house team, concept to maintenance

Traceable architectural fabric from established manufacturers — Serge Ferrari, Mehler, Heytex — with test certificates supplied.

Cost

What drives the cost of a tensile structure in Guwahati

The same factors apply everywhere; the mix changes with the project and the site.

Covered area Clear span Structural form Structure height Steel tonnage Membrane grade Local wind zone Soil & foundation type Drainage & gutters Integrated lighting Site access & craneage Distance & logistics from the Delhi NCR base Working around live operations

There is no meaningful fixed rate per square foot — two structures of the same area can differ by a wide margin. Distance and site access affect the logistics line, but there is no flat “Guwahati premium”. Send your requirement for a design direction and an itemised quote; the tensile structure cost guide sets out every factor.

Common Questions

Tensile structures in Guwahati FAQ

Questions specific to tensile structure projects in Guwahati and the north-east.

Yes. Two documented projects in the city — an atrium-skylight tensile structure and a ~2,200 m² canopy for Delhi Public School — plus a further Assam project at Silchar Airport. Steel and membrane are fabricated at the Delhi NCR workshop and shipped; the same in-house team installs.

Yes — the two above, and the Silchar Airport canopy in the same state. They cover different work: an interior architectural skylight, a large school campus, and a public terminal canopy.

No — there is no local office, factory or team. Ekra Decor works across India from a single Delhi NCR base.

Yes — this is the defining constraint. Assam is in Seismic Zone V, the most severe category in India, so the frame, its bracing and its foundations are detailed for Zone V alongside the wind and monsoon cases.

Yes — if the drainage is engineered for it. The falls, gutters and outlets are sized for a very heavy, prolonged monsoon, with a designed overflow route.

Yes — as built for the Guwahati atrium. Faceted tensioned-membrane skylight elements set into a concrete building bring diffuse, glare-free daylight deep inside, and are detailed for weather-tightness, condensation control and cleaning access.

There is no fixed rate per square foot. Cost depends on the area, span, form, steel, membrane and site conditions; the seismic detailing and distance from the Delhi NCR base both affect the total. Send your requirement for an itemised quote.
