Why a tensile roof in Kerala
Demand in Kerala looks different from most of India. A large share comes from homes and small buildings: a roof over the top-floor terrace, a car porch, a covered courtyard, where a tensile roof replaces a heavy sheet or concrete extension. Alongside that sit the IT parks (Infopark in Kochi, Technopark in Thiruvananthapuram, Cyberpark in Kozhikode), hospitals, schools and colleges, convention and wedding halls, places of worship with large courtyards, resorts in Kumarakom, Munnar and along the coast, and the port and logistics belt around Kochi.
The climate shapes the design more than the use does. Kerala takes the south-west monsoon first and hardest, from early June, then a second spell from the north-east monsoon in October and November. The air stays humid all year, and the coastal strip adds salt. The fabric, the steel and the drainage are all chosen for that.
Ekra Decor has not yet completed a documented project in Kerala. Its humid and coastal work includes the Siemens roof at Goa and the waterfront canopies at Port Blair, and its nearest southern project is the 1,800 m² canopy for the BDA housing scheme in Bangalore. Kerala enquiries go to the Bangalore office; the same in-house team designs, fabricates and installs. More on how we work as a tensile structure manufacturer.
How Kerala’s climate shapes the design
Rain and humidity drive a Kerala design far more than heat. This is general climate information for the state; the wind and rain values used in a structural design come from the site survey and the applicable codes, not from a page like this.
One of India’s heaviest monsoons
The south-west monsoon reaches Kerala first, usually in early June, and brings most of the year’s rain in long, heavy spells; the state flooded badly in 2018. Membrane slopes are kept steep enough to shed water fast, and gutters and downpipes are sized for intense rain with a designed overflow.
A second, north-east monsoon
October and November bring another wet season, often with thunderstorms. A Kerala structure spends much of the year wet, so ponding is designed out completely: no flat spots in the fabric and no water traps at the edges.
Humid all year
Warm, damp air encourages mould and algae on any surface that stays wet. A PVDF top-coat stops dirt and spores bonding to the fabric, and an open, ventilated form lets the membrane dry between showers.
Salt air along the coast
Kochi, Alappuzha, Kollam, Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram sit on or near the sea. Near the coast the steel is hot-dip galvanised and painted, and exposed cables and fittings are stainless.
Monsoon squalls
Uplift from monsoon gusts governs the frame and the anchors. The design wind pressure is taken for the site under IS 875 Part 3, allowing for the exposure of a coastal or open hill site.
Laterite, sand and soft clay
Much of the midland is laterite, which is good to found on. The coastal strip is sandy, and areas such as Kuttanad sit on soft, waterlogged clay. The foundation type comes from the site’s own soil investigation to IS 456.

Tensile structures that make sense in Kerala
Where a tensile roof does the most work in Kerala, starting with the most common request.
Terrace & rooftop roofing
A tensile roof over a top-floor terrace keeps it dry through the monsoon and usable as living or utility space, without the weight of a concrete slab or the noise of metal sheet in heavy rain. Tensile roofing →
Car porches & parking sheds
Single-car porches for homes, and column-free cantilever shades for apartments, hospitals, malls and IT parks. Car parking sheds →
Courtyards & places of worship
Covered courtyards for churches, temples and mosques, and congregation or festival areas that need cover for large gatherings. Custom fabric structures →
Convention & wedding halls
Entrance canopies, open-sided event roofs and dining cover for convention centres and wedding venues. Hotels & banquets →
Schools, colleges & hospitals
Assembly and sports-court covers, walkways between blocks, and drop-off and queue canopies. Structures for schools →
Resorts & hospitality
Poolside canopies, open dining pavilions and lawn structures for backwater, hill and beach resorts. Tensile canopies →
Membrane choice for Kerala
In Kerala the rain and the humidity decide the fabric more than the sun does.
PVDF-lacquered PVC
Sheds water and dirt, resists mould and algae staining in damp air, and holds up to coastal salt. PVDF fabric →
PTFE-coated glass
Close to self-cleaning and chemically inert, for a landmark or long-life structure near the sea. PTFE fabric →
PVC-coated polyester
For a budget or sheltered inland structure; expect to clean it more often in Kerala’s humidity. PVC fabric →
The steel matters as much as the fabric: hot-dip galvanised as standard, with paint or a duplex coating and stainless fittings within reach of the sea. Full comparison on the membrane materials page.
Engineering for Kerala sites
Points that come up on a Kerala project. No structural values are quoted here.
- Site survey & soil investigation — laterite, coastal sand or soft clay; the foundation type comes from the site’s own investigation to IS 456.
- Rooftop installations — on an existing terrace, the frame loads are checked against the building, and the fixings are detailed so they do not break the roof’s waterproofing.
- Wind — uplift governs; the design wind pressure is taken for the site under IS 875 Part 3.
- Drainage — fast-shedding slopes, no ponding points, and gutters sized for intense monsoon rain with a designed overflow route.
- Corrosion protection — galvanised and coated steel, stainless fittings near the coast, and a PVDF or PTFE membrane.
- Planned around the monsoon — steel and membrane are made off-site at the workshop, and site work is scheduled into drier windows where possible.

What drives the cost of a tensile structure in Kerala
The same factors apply everywhere; the mix changes with the project and the site.
Most installed projects fall between ₹280 and ₹2,500 per sq ft, plus GST. A small car porch or terrace roof usually costs more per square foot than a large car park, because the design and site setup are spread over less area. Distance affects the logistics line, but there is no flat “Kerala premium”. Send your requirement for an itemised quote; the tensile structure cost guide sets out every factor.
Tensile roofing in Kerala FAQ
Questions we hear most often from Kerala homeowners, builders and institutions.
Yes. Ekra Decor designs, fabricates and installs tensile structures across Kerala. Enquiries are handled by our Bangalore office, the steel and membrane are made at our Delhi NCR workshop, and the same in-house team surveys and installs on site.
Yes, over most RCC terraces. We check the frame loads against your building and detail the fixings so the existing roof waterproofing stays intact. Permission rules for rooftop structures vary between local bodies, so check with your municipality or panchayat; we provide the drawings and structural details the application needs. More on permissions and approvals.
Yes, when it is designed for it. The membrane is shaped steep enough to shed water quickly with no ponding points, gutters and downpipes are sized for intense rainfall with an overflow route, and the frame and anchors are designed for the site wind under IS 875 Part 3.
A plain PVC fabric can stain in damp air. A PVDF top-coat resists dirt and spores, and an open, ventilated form helps the membrane dry between showers. A wash once or twice a year keeps it clean; see our maintenance guide.
Not yet. Our nearest southern project is the 1,800 m² canopy for the Bangalore Development Authority housing scheme at Alur, and our humid coastal work includes the Siemens roof at Goa and the waterfront canopies at Port Blair.
Most installed projects fall between ₹280 and ₹2,500 per sq ft, plus GST, with no flat Kerala premium. Where yours falls depends on the area, span, membrane grade, steel, site access and how close the site is to the sea. A small car porch or terrace roof usually costs more per square foot than a large car park. Send your requirement for an itemised quote.
