Why the industry changes the design
A tensile structure for a school playground and one for a bus depot use the same fabrics and the same engineering. What changes by sector is which constraint governs the design.
Public assembly — fire performance
Auditoriums, stadiums, airports and transit halls put people and escape routes under the roof, so fire behaviour leads. That usually points to a non-combustible PTFE-glass membrane and a documented fire strategy.
Warehousing and industry — span and clearance
Column-free bays keep forklift and crane routes clear, and the frame is detailed for the knocks of a working yard. See fabric buildings and garage sheds.
Hospitality and retail — the look
The canopy is part of the guest experience, so form, finish and lighting matter as much as the shelter — the territory of designer and architectural canopies.
Healthcare — hygiene and continuity
Wash-down surfaces, covered ambulance and patient routes, and a build sequence that keeps a live hospital running.
Education — safety and budget
Robust, low-maintenance cover over play, assembly and circulation areas, delivered within a school's funding cycle.
Residential and community — scale
Light, in-proportion structures that sit with the buildings around them rather than dominating them.
Every sector runs the same design-to-install process, sized and specified to its own priorities. Browse completed work by sector, or tell us your industry and site.
How the sector shapes the design

How it is engineered and built
The governing load
A tensile structure weighs almost nothing, so wind uplift is the governing load. The membrane is form-found into double curvature so it stays taut, and the frame and foundations are sized for the site’s design wind pressure under IS 875 Part 3.
Steel & foundations to code
The frame is designed to IS 800 and the footings to IS 456, checked for uplift and overturning. Galvanising to IS 4759 / IS 2629 for corrosion protection.
Built off-site, raised fast
Steel is cut, welded and galvanised in the workshop and the membrane is cut and welded into panels, while the footings are cast on site. On-site work is then quick and low-disruption.
One accountable team
Survey, 3D design, fabrication, installation and tensioning are all Ekra Decor’s own team, with a handover pack of drawings, load report, stability certificate and material certificates.
Cost across sectors
Same factors, different mix.
The cost drivers are the same in every sector — membrane grade, span, form, steel, foundations, site and scale — but the mix differs. A public-assembly roof carries the PTFE and fire-strategy cost; a warehouse roof is span-driven; a hospitality canopy carries the finish and lighting cost. The full breakdown is in the tensile structure cost guide.

Tensile structures by industry FAQ
The questions people ask about tensile structures for their sector.
The fabrics and the engineering are the same. What changes by sector is which requirement governs — fire performance for public assembly, span for warehousing, finish for hospitality, hygiene for healthcare, budget for education.
Public assembly and transit, warehousing and industry, hospitality and retail, healthcare, education, transport and parking, public infrastructure, residential, and sports and recreation — 60+ documented projects across the nine.
Fire performance. People and escape routes are under the roof, so the membrane is usually non-combustible PTFE-coated glass and the project carries a documented fire strategy.
Span and clearance — column-free bays that keep forklift and crane routes clear, on a frame detailed for a working yard.
The look. The canopy is part of the guest experience, so the form, the finish and the lighting matter as much as the weather cover.
Yes — in healthcare, industry and transit especially, the steel and membrane are fabricated off-site and the work is sequenced to keep the site operational.
The projects page filters by category, and each project has its own page with photographs and recorded scope.
