Why a tensile structure in Chennai

How the local climate shapes the design

Chennai's climate is defined by salt, the north-east monsoon and cyclone exposure — not by heat alone. This is general climate information for the area; the wind, rain and snow values used in a structural design come from the site survey and the applicable codes, not from a page like this.

Hot and humid for most of the year

Chennai has little cool season — it is warm and very humid nearly year round, with a hot pre-monsoon peak. Open, well-ventilated forms and a light membrane matter more than fighting a short heat spike.

A north-east-monsoon city

Unlike most of India, Chennai gets the bulk of its rain from the retreating north-east monsoon (October–December), often in very heavy spells, and it has flooded severely. Drainage is sized for that, with a generous designed overflow.

Cyclone exposure from the Bay of Bengal

Constant coastal salt air

Salt-laden humidity attacks unprotected steel. The frame is galvanised and coated, exposed cables and fittings are stainless, and the membrane is a fluoropolymer-coated fabric.
