Overview

Why a tensile structure in Udaipur

Udaipur's economy runs on three things: heavy industry and research (P.I. Industries' R&D campus, Hindustan Zinc and its supply chain, the Madri, Sukher and Kaladwas industrial areas), a very large destination-wedding and luxury-hospitality industry, and a growing education and institutional sector. Tensile structures serve all three — campus shade and cover, event and banquet canopies, and institutional courtyards.

Ekra Decor's documented Udaipur project is a 1,400 m² tensile canopy for the P.I. Industries R&D campus — tensioned fabric cover for a scientific research site — completed in about two months. (This project is recorded without site photographs on file; the projects shown below are comparable regional work, labelled with their actual locations.)

Udaipur is served from the Delhi NCR base via the Jaipur corridor. Steel and membrane are fabricated at the workshop and shipped; the same in-house team installs. For the full technical background, see the tensile structure guide.

Local Climate & Environment

How the local climate shapes the design

Udaipur sits in hot, semi-arid Mewar — heat, dust storms and strong sun are the design drivers. This is general climate information for the area; the wind, rain and snow values used in a structural design come from the site survey and the applicable codes, not from a page like this.

Very hot, very dry summers

April to June regularly exceed 42 °C with a hot, dry wind. Shade is the whole point of a structure here — a light-toned, high-reflectance membrane and an open, ventilated form make the difference between usable and not.

Severe pre-monsoon dust storms

The pre-monsoon aandhi dust storms of May and June are intense. A curved, well-tensioned membrane rides the gust, and a PVDF finish sheds dust that would cake a plain lacquer.

Intense solar & UV load

The high, dry-air sun means strong UV. The membrane is chosen for UV stability and colour hold, and the geometry maximises the shaded footprint.

A short, sharp monsoon

The July–September monsoon (~650–800 mm) is brief but can arrive in heavy bursts. Drainage is designed for the burst rate even though the annual total is modest.

Large diurnal & seasonal swing

Semi-arid Rajasthan swings widely between day and night and summer and winter. That movement is designed into the connections so the fabric never slackens.

Firm ground; inland, no salt

The ground is generally firm and good to found on; footings to IS 456. Inland and dry — standard galvanising is adequate, corrosion is not the concern it is on the coast.

Materials

Membrane choice for the local climate

Intense sun and dust storms make the membrane's UV stability and dirt resistance the key decisions.

Recommended

PVDF-lacquered PVC

The fluorine top-coat resists the pre-monsoon dust and holds colour under the strong Mewar sun — it stays clean and bright far longer than a plain lacquer here. PVDF fabric →

Landmark

PTFE-coated glass

Near self-cleaning and unaffected by UV — for a heritage-facing hospitality or civic structure meant to last decades. PTFE fabric →

Economy

PVC-coated polyester

Workable on a budget canopy, but it needs regular cleaning to stay bright under the Udaipur dust. PVC fabric →

Inland and dry — standard hot-dip galvanising is adequate for the steel; corrosion is not the concern it is on the coast. Full comparison on the membrane materials page.

Design & Engineering

Engineering for local conditions

Points that come up on a Udaipur project. No structural values are quoted here.

  • Site survey & soil investigation — the ground is generally firm and good to found on; footings to IS 456, sized against uplift.
  • Wind — the aandhi dust storms bring strong gusts; a curved, well-tensioned membrane rides them, and uplift is assessed for the site under IS 875 Part 3.
  • Drainage — designed for the burst rate of a short, sharp monsoon even though the annual rainfall total is modest.
  • Shading footprint & airflow — the geometry is set to maximise the shaded area and keep air moving underneath, because summer comfort is the whole point in Mewar.
  • Research-campus detailing — a canopy on a scientific site is planned around service access, controlled areas and the campus's own safety requirements.
  • Corrosion protection — the steel is hot-dip galvanised; the coating class is set by the local air.
  • Thermal movement — the seasonal temperature swing is designed into the connections so the membrane never slackens.
  • Off-site fabrication — steel and membrane are cut and made at the workshop and shipped, so the on-site work is assembly and tensioning.

Cost

What drives the cost of a tensile structure in Udaipur

The same factors apply everywhere; the mix changes with the project and the site.

Covered area Clear span Structural form Structure height Steel tonnage Membrane grade Local wind zone Soil & foundation type Drainage & gutters Integrated lighting Site access & craneage Distance & logistics from the Delhi NCR base Working around live operations

There is no meaningful fixed rate per square foot — two structures of the same area can differ by a wide margin. Distance and site access affect the logistics line, but there is no flat “Udaipur premium”. Send your requirement for a design direction and an itemised quote; the tensile structure cost guide sets out every factor.

Common Questions

Tensile structures in Udaipur FAQ

Questions specific to tensile structure projects in Udaipur and the Mewar region.

Yes. Ekra Decor built a 1,400 m² tensile canopy for the P.I. Industries R&D campus at Udaipur and serves the wider Mewar region from the Delhi NCR base via the Jaipur corridor.

Yes — the P.I. Industries R&D-campus canopy, completed in about two months. That project is recorded without site photographs on file; the projects shown on this page are comparable regional work, each labelled with its actual location.

No — there is no local office or team. Udaipur is served from the Delhi NCR base via the Jaipur corridor.

A PVDF-lacquered PVC membrane is recommended — the fluorine top-coat resists the pre-monsoon dust and holds colour under the strong Mewar sun. PTFE-glass for a heritage-facing hospitality or civic landmark.

Yes — a curved, well-tensioned membrane rides a dust-storm gust rather than fighting it, and the wind uplift is assessed for the specific site under IS 875 Part 3. Drainage is sized for the burst rate of the short monsoon.

Conical and multi-peak canopies over event lawns and banquet spaces — column-free, sculptural, and drained clear of the guests — plus poolside and terrace shades for the hotels.

There is no fixed rate per square foot, and no flat Udaipur premium — distance from the Delhi NCR base affects the logistics line only. Cost depends on the covered area, span, form, steel, membrane grade and site conditions. Send your requirement for an itemised quote.
