Tensile, shade sail, or polycarbonate depends what you're covering.

A shade sail is really a small tensile fabric structure — a single tensioned membrane anchored at a few points, without the steel frame and cable network a larger tensile roof uses. Ekra Decor builds both, from garden shade sails up to large-span tensile roofs, using the same membrane materials at different scales. Polycarbonate is a different system entirely: rigid sheet roofing rather than tensioned fabric.

Each does something the others can't. Tensile fabric spans large column-free areas in complex 3D geometry. Polycarbonate gives near-glass clarity and virtually unbreakable impact resistance. A shade sail is the fastest, most affordable way to shade a small area. Tensile Fabric Structure

A tensioned membrane on a steel cable and column framework. This is what makes large, column-free spans and complex 3D or organic geometry possible — the reason it's used for stadium roofs, airport canopies and large public structures. If punctured, high tension stops the tear from spreading, and it can be patched. Life expectancy depends on membrane: PTFE coated fiberglass is rated 30+ years, ETFE foil 30–50 years.

A shade sail is a small, simple tensile fabric structure — a single tensioned membrane anchored at a few points, without a steel frame or cable network. It's the fastest and most affordable way to shade a garden, patio or small courtyard, using the same membrane materials as a larger tensile roof, just at a smaller scale and lower upfront cost.

Polycarbonate Roofing

Rigid sheet roofing, not tensioned fabric. Solid polycarbonate is up to 250 times more impact-resistant than glass and virtually unbreakable; UV-protected sheets block 99.9% of harmful UV radiation. Sheets can be cold-curved on site into vaults and domes, though not to the free-form geometry tensile fabric allows. A premium polycarbonate roof typically lasts 10–20 years.

Polycarbonate is the clearer option — solid sheets look close to glass, while multiwall sheets give a diffused, evenly lit effect. Tensile fabric membranes are translucent rather than transparent: they let daylight through and glow from within, but you can't see through them.

Solid polycarbonate is up to 250 times more impact-resistant than glass, making it virtually unbreakable — a genuine advantage against hail or falling debris. Tensile fabric isn't rigid, so it works differently: it's highly tear-resistant, and if punctured, the membrane's tension stops the tear from spreading, and it can be patched rather than replaced.

A premium polycarbonate roof typically lasts 10 to 20 years. Tensile fabric spans a wider range depending on the membrane: PTFE coated fiberglass is rated for 30+ years and ETFE foil for 30 to 50 years, both well beyond polycarbonate; lighter PVC membranes used for shade sails typically last 10–15 years — shorter than PTFE, traded off against a lower upfront cost.
