ETFE Structures: Where This Material Makes Sense

ETFE (Ethylene Tetrafluoroethylene) is a highly transparent, ultra-lightweight polymer foil used as a modern alternative to architectural glass. Here's what it's actually used for, and why.

Where It's Used

Stadium Roofs, Atriums, Airport Terminals

ETFE is the material worldwide architecture reaches for when a roof needs to be nearly as transparent as glass, at a fraction of the weight — stadium roofs, botanical gardens, airport terminals and large shopping-mall atriums are its classic applications. Ekra Decor offers ETFE as part of its material range alongside PVC, PVDF and PTFE; if your project calls for it, a site survey confirms whether ETFE's specific properties are the right fit before anything is quoted.

Why ETFE

What Sets It Apart From Other Membranes

Near-Glass Transparency

A single layer of ETFE can transmit up to 95% of visible light. It can also be printed with ‘fritting’ patterns to control solar glare and heat gain.

About 1% the Weight of Glass

An ETFE cushion system weighs approximately 1% of the weight of an equivalent glass roof, drastically reducing the structural steel required.

30–50 Year Lifespan

ETFE does not degrade under UV light or environmental pollution. It has an expected lifespan of 30 to 50 years.

Thermal Insulation

When configured as multi-layer inflated cushions, ETFE provides excellent thermal insulation, outperforming traditional single-glazed glass.

Self-Cleaning

ETFE has a very smooth, non-stick surface similar to Teflon, so rainfall effectively washes away dirt and debris.

Self-Extinguishing Fire Safety

ETFE is self-extinguishing. In the event of a fire, it shrinks away from the heat and allows smoke to vent out, without dropping burning particles.

Installation & Durability

How ETFE Actually Gets Installed

ETFE is most commonly installed as pneumatic cushions (2 to 4 layers) inflated with low-pressure air, held within aluminum extrusions. While thin (typically 200-300 microns), ETFE can stretch up to 300% without breaking and is highly resistant to tearing and impact. Because the cushions are constantly supplied with air, a small puncture won't cause deflation. The hole can be easily patched with ETFE tape.

Is ETFE right for your project?

ETFE isn't the right fit for every application — a site survey confirms whether its span, transparency and budget profile match what your project needs, versus PVC, PVDF or PTFE.
