How a custom fabric structure is designed and built
A custom fabric structure is engineered from the site and the brief rather than picked from a catalogue. The process is more involved than a standard canopy, but it is what lets the geometry, the spans and the connections all suit one particular place.
1. Brief and site survey
What is being covered, the area, the clearances, the look you are after, the wind zone and the ground conditions. Ekra Decor measures the site and checks access, drainage and how the structure connects to anything existing.
2. Concept and form options
Two or three form options — cone, saddle, wave, barrel — sketched against the site, with the trade-offs in span, height, drainage and cost.
3. Form-finding and analysis
The chosen form is form-found and then analysed for wind, and for rain or snow where relevant, in ixCube and ANSYS. Membrane stresses, cable forces and steel sections come out of this step.
4. Client 3D review
A 3D render and a walk-through of the geometry for sign-off before anything is detailed.
5. Fabrication drawings and patterning
General-arrangement and workshop drawings for the steel; the membrane surface is unrolled into compensated cutting patterns.
6. In-house fabrication
Steel cut, welded and hot-dip galvanised; membrane panels CNC-cut and high-frequency welded — all in Ekra Decor's own works, not subcontracted.
7. Install, tension, hand over
Frame erected, membrane lifted and tensioned to the design pre-stress, and a handover pack with the design calculations and an O&M manual.

How a custom fabric structure is delivered
Every custom project follows the same sequence. The detail changes; the discipline does not.
- Brief & site survey — the space, the loads, the architecture and the intent are established together.
- Concept & form-finding — the membrane geometry is solved by software so the pre-stress is balanced and the surface drains; 3D visuals for approval.
- Structural design — cable and membrane stress, steel to IS 800, foundations to IS 456, wind to IS 875 Part 3.
- Patterning & drawings — the 3D surface is unrolled into cutting patterns; fabrication and installation drawings are issued.
- Fabrication — steel and membrane made in-house, with per-shift quality control.
- Installation & tensioning — own crew; erection, membrane lift, staged tensioning, drainage and geometry checks.
- Handover & support — drawings, load report, stability and material certificates, O&M manual, and maintenance support after.
Membrane options
The membrane is chosen for the project — PVC or PVDF for most work, PTFE-glass for permanence or a fire class, ETFE film where daylight is critical. The membrane materials page compares them.
PVC-coated polyester
The most economical choice and the widest colour range; blocks the rain, hail and almost all UV. PVC fabric →

The same base with a tougher top-coat that stays cleaner under dust and pollution. PVDF fabric →

How it is engineered and built
The governing load
A tensile structure weighs almost nothing, so wind uplift is the governing load, not gravity. The membrane is form-found into double curvature so it stays taut and cannot lift, and the frame and foundations are sized for the site’s design wind pressure under IS 875 Part 3.
Steel & foundations to code
The frame is designed to IS 800 and the footings to IS 456, checked for uplift and overturning. Galvanising to IS 4759 / IS 2629 for corrosion protection.
Built off-site, raised fast
Steel is cut, welded and galvanised in the workshop and the membrane is cut and welded into panels, while the footings are cast on site. On-site work is then quick and low-disruption.

Survey, 3D design, fabrication, installation and tensioning are all Ekra Decor’s own team, with a handover pack of drawings, load report, stability certificate and material certificates.
What drives the cost
Cost is not a fixed rate per square foot — two structures of the same size can differ widely. The main factors:

Looking after the structure
- Cleaning — a periodic wash; PVDF and PTFE surfaces largely self-clean in rain.
- Membrane & seams — check for abrasion, coating wear and seam lifting at the corners and edges.
- Cable tension — a first re-tension after the initial season, then a periodic check.
- Steel & connections — inspect the galvanising and the connections at ground level.
- Drainage — keep the low points, gutters and outlets clear before the monsoon.
