Why a tensile structure in Mumbai
Mumbai's tensile-structure demand comes from its industrial and logistics estates (Kalwa, Thane–Belapur, the MIDC belts, the port and its hinterland), its dense commercial districts (BKC, Lower Parel, Andheri), a large hospitality and club sector along the coast, and the institutional and school stock of the suburbs. The MMR adds fast-growing Navi Mumbai and the industrial corridor toward Pune.
Ekra Decor's documented Mumbai work is in the industrial band — a working-area canopy for Siemens, and a large covered structure for a further Mumbai client. The company's coastal experience also includes the seafront pavilions at Diu on the west coast, engineered to the same salt-air specification a Mumbai project needs.
Mumbai is the furthest of the Tier 1 cities from the Delhi NCR base, which affects logistics but not capability — steel and membrane are fabricated at the workshop and shipped, and the same in-house team installs. For the full technical background, see the tensile structure guide.
How the local climate shapes the design
Mumbai's climate makes two things non-negotiable: drainage capacity and corrosion protection. This is general climate information for the area; the wind, rain and snow values used in a structural design come from the site survey and the applicable codes, not from a page like this.
One of India's heaviest urban monsoons
June to September brings roughly 2,200 mm of rain, much of it in intense hourly bursts. The roof geometry is given steep falls, over-sized valley and eaves gutters, and a designed overflow route, so it clears a cloudburst without ponding.
Coastal salt air, year round
Salt-laden humidity attacks unprotected steel and fittings. The frame is hot-dip galvanised and painted or duplex-coated, exposed cables and fittings are stainless, and a PVDF- or PTFE-coated membrane is chosen for its resistance to salt and UV.
High humidity, moderate temperature
Mumbai does not get the extreme heat of the north, but the humidity is high all year. Enclosed or domed forms are detailed with vents or a raised eave so warm, moist air escapes.
Cyclone-fringe exposure
The Arabian Sea coast sees the edge of cyclone-season weather. Wind uplift is taken to the coastal design figure under IS 875 Part 3, not a lighter inland value.
Constrained, congested sites
Mumbai plots are tight and access is difficult. Off-site fabrication and a carefully planned crane lift keep the on-site programme and disruption short.
Reclaimed & variable ground
Soil varies widely across the city, including reclaimed land. Foundations — pad, raft or pile — are sized from the site's own soil investigation to IS 456.
Tensile structures that make sense in Mumbai
Weighted toward the industrial, logistics and coastal-hospitality demand.
Industrial & logistics cover
Covered yards, staging and working areas on the MIDC and Thane–Belapur estates — as built for Siemens. Industrial canopies →
Warehouse & distribution canopies
Loading canopies and covered docks for the port hinterland and the Bhiwandi logistics belt. Fabric buildings →
Coastal hospitality & club structures
Poolside canopies, event lawns and promenade pavilions engineered for salt air. Custom fabric structures →
Commercial car parking
Column-free cantilever shades over the tight car parks of BKC and the western suburbs, with concealed drainage. Car parking tensile shades →
School & institutional covers
All-weather sports-court and assembly covers for the suburban school stock. Sports-court & assembly covers →
Entrance & walkway canopies
Covered links and building entrances that stay usable through the monsoon. Walkway tensile structures →
Membrane choice for the local climate
The coast dictates the specification — UV and salt resistance matter more than colour here.
PVDF-lacquered PVC
The PVDF top-coat resists salt-laden humidity and UV and stays cleaner in the coastal air. PVDF fabric →
PTFE-coated glass
Chemically inert and near self-cleaning — the best-in-class choice for a permanent coastal structure or where a fire class applies. PTFE fabric →
PVC-coated polyester
Only for a short-life or sheltered structure; a plain PVC lacquer chalks faster in the salt air. PVC fabric →
The steel matters as much as the membrane in Mumbai: hot-dip galvanising plus a paint or duplex system, and stainless cables and fittings where exposed. Full comparison on the membrane materials page.
Engineering for local conditions
Points that come up on a Mumbai project.
- Site survey & soil investigation — Mumbai's ground varies widely, including reclaimed land, so the foundation type is set from the site's own investigation to IS 456.
- Drainage — the single biggest design issue. Falls, valley and eaves gutters and outlets are sized for the intense hourly rainfall of the Mumbai monsoon, with a designed overflow route.
- Corrosion protection — hot-dip galvanising plus paint or duplex coating on the steel, stainless cables and fittings, and a salt-stable membrane.
- Wind — taken to the coastal, cyclone-fringe design figure under IS 875 Part 3, not a lighter inland value.
- Constrained-site logistics — off-site fabrication and a carefully planned crane lift keep the on-site programme and the disruption on a congested plot short.
- Ventilation — enclosed or domed forms get vents or a raised eave designed in to move the year-round humidity.

What drives the cost of a tensile structure in Mumbai
The same factors apply everywhere; the mix changes with the project and the site.
There is no meaningful fixed rate per square foot — two structures of the same area can differ by a wide margin. Distance and site access affect the logistics line, but there is no flat “Mumbai premium”. Send your requirement for a design direction and an itemised quote; the tensile structure cost guide sets out every factor.
Tensile structures in Mumbai FAQ
Questions specific to tensile structure projects in Mumbai and the MMR.
Yes. Two documented projects in the city — a working-area canopy for Siemens and a large covered structure for a further Mumbai client. Steel and membrane are fabricated at the Delhi NCR workshop and shipped; the same in-house team installs on site.
Yes — the two above. The company's coastal experience also includes the seafront pavilions at Diu on the west coast, built to the same salt-air specification a Mumbai project needs.
No — there is no local office, factory or team. Ekra Decor works across India from a single Delhi NCR base; the same team designs, fabricates and installs, Mumbai included.
Yes — if the drainage is engineered for it. The falls, gutters and outlets are sized for the intense hourly rainfall of the Mumbai monsoon, with a designed overflow route so a blocked outlet cannot pond the membrane. This is the single biggest design issue on a Mumbai project.
The steel is hot-dip galvanised and painted or duplex-coated, exposed cables and fittings are stainless, and the membrane is a PVDF- or PTFE-coated fabric chosen for its resistance to salt and UV. A plain PVC lacquer is not the right choice for the Mumbai coast.
PVDF-lacquered PVC as the usual choice, PTFE-coated glass for a permanent coastal structure or a fire class. The steel specification matters as much as the fabric here.
There is no fixed rate per square foot. Cost depends on the area, span, form, steel, membrane and site conditions. Distance from the Delhi NCR base affects the logistics line; the corrosion specification also adds cost over an inland project. Send your requirement for an itemised quote.
