Project Overview
from Ekra Decor’s
project records
Ekra Decor built a tensile structure for Siemens Ltd. in Mumbai. Siemens operates real manufacturing and office facilities in the Mumbai region, including its documented Kalwa Works.
At about 1,394 m² the structure is a mid-sized industrial canopy — a covered working or storage area, a loading zone, a staff assembly or parking cover. On a working site in Mumbai a tensile canopy is a practical way to add a substantial covered footprint without a long building programme, and to keep it usable through one of the heaviest urban monsoons in the country.
The archive records about 1,394 m² and a roughly 50-day build. This is a separate entry from Ekra Decor’s much larger Siemens, Goa project; the client is independently confirmed for both.

Siemens’ Mumbai-region facilities, including Kalwa Works, are documented.
Built for the Mumbai monsoon
The membrane geometry and drainage are sized for one of the heaviest urban rainfall regimes in India.
Delivered in about 50 days
A roughly seven-week programme on a working site.
Distinct from Siemens Goa
A separate, much smaller project than the 20,000 m² Goa structure.
Column-light span
Clear bays keep movement free underneath.

The Brief
A covered working area for a Mumbai plant
An industrial site in Mumbai has a specific weather problem: the monsoon here is relentless for months, and any working or storage area left open is effectively out of use through it. The brief for a canopy is to put a proper weatherproof roof over that area, sized for Mumbai rain, and to build it without stopping the site.
Ekra Decor delivered the structure as a turnkey job: survey and setting-out, 3D structural and membrane design, fabrication of the galvanised steel frame and the welded fabric, and installation and tensioning, over about 1,394 m² in roughly 50 days. The archive does not record which area the canopy covers, so this page keeps that general.
Design & Engineering
An industrial canopy sized for Mumbai rain
The canopy is designed around the working area it covers — columns to the edges and out of the material and vehicle paths, membrane spanning overhead, clear height set for the equipment underneath.
The membrane is form-found in 3D and pre-stressed into double curvature so it stays taut under wind uplift and holds its shape. What gets particular attention on a Mumbai site is the drainage: the fall, the valley and eaves details and the outlet sizing are all designed for sustained heavy rainfall, so water clears the roof fast and does not pond and add load. Ekra Decor designs the steelwork to IS 800 and checks the structure for wind, rain and seismic loading to the applicable Indian codes, with the foundations sized against uplift, and the steel hot-dip galvanised against the humid coastal air.
Fabrication & Installation
Prefabricated, erected around operations
The steel is cut, welded and hot-dip galvanised in the workshop and the membrane is cut and high-frequency welded into panels off-site, so on-site work is limited to casting the foundations, erecting the frame and tensioning the membrane.
On a working plant the sequence is fenced and planned around site activity, with completed areas handed back as they are finished. The canopy went up in about 50 days.
The Result
A working area that stays usable in the rains
The Siemens site gained a substantial covered area that keeps working through the Mumbai monsoon — stock, equipment or operations under a real roof rather than out in the rain — built quickly and without disrupting the plant. Upkeep is limited to cleaning and periodic checks.

Common Questions
About this project & building something similar
Where is this project located?
Mumbai, Maharashtra.
How large is the covered area?
≈1,394 m² (15,000 sq ft), per Ekra Decor's project records.
How long did this project take to build?
≈50 days from start to finish, per Ekra Decor's project records — in line with the standard 10 to 15 day fabrication and 3 to 7 day on-site installation timeline used across most projects.
Who was this project built for?
Siemens Ltd.
Are there real photographs of this project?
Yes — 4 photographs from Ekra Decor's own project archive appear in the gallery above, not a stock or illustrative image.
Can Ekra Decor build something similar for my site?
Yes — every project starts with a site survey and a custom 3D design tailored to your space, not a fixed template. Get in touch to discuss a similar structure for your own site.
What membrane material would a structure like this be built in?
The choice depends on span, climate and intended lifespan. PVC-coated polyester is the most cost-effective option, with a 10–15 year service life. PVDF-coated polyester adds a self-cleaning top layer and pushes that to 15–20 years. PTFE-coated fibreglass is a permanent, non-combustible membrane with a life measured in decades, and ETFE film is used where an ultra-light, highly transparent roof is needed.
Is the structure engineered to Indian standards?
Yes. Wind, rain and — where relevant — snow and seismic loads are analysed to the applicable IS codes, and the steelwork is designed to IS 800. The membrane is form-found so its stresses stay balanced in double curvature, and the foundations are sized against uplift and overturning rather than gravity alone — the governing case for a lightweight tensile roof.
What warranty and documentation come with the structure?
Up to a 10-year written warranty on the membrane, plus as-built drawings, original mill certificates for the membrane and steel, a structural stability certificate and an operation & maintenance manual on handover. An annual maintenance contract covering inspection and re-tensioning is optional.
How much maintenance does a tensile structure need?
Very little — a periodic wash to remove surface dirt, and an annual check of cable tension and bolt torque. PVDF and PTFE membranes are largely self-cleaning, so rain keeps them looking new. We can carry this out under an annual maintenance contract if you prefer.
