Overview

What a swimming pool tensile structure is

A pool is a difficult space to leave uncovered. Direct sun causes glare that makes lane markings and race finishes hard to judge; rain and wind-blown leaves foul the water and drive up filtration load; and swimmers and spectators need shade for hours at a stretch. A tensile roof solves all of that without darkening the hall. Pools that need sun as well as shade are the classic case for a retractable roof.

The roof is usually a barrel vault along the length of the pool, or a sail over a smaller private pool. A translucent membrane diffuses the daylight — even, shadow-free light with the glare taken out — while the form is pitched to shed rain to the eaves, clear of the water.

Because the environment is warm, humid and chlorine-laden, the specification steps up: the steel is hot-dip galvanised, exposed fittings are stainless, and the membrane is a coated fabric with a durable, cleanable surface.

Structural Forms

Pool roof forms

The form follows the pool. A lap pool suits a barrel vault; a small private pool suits a sail.

Barrel vault

A curved membrane spans across the poolside and repeats along the length. The standard for a lap or competition pool; carried on columns set behind the deck and the seating.

Sail / hypar

An anticlastic sail over a smaller private pool — open, light, and quick to install, shading the water and the deck.

Ridge-and-valley

A folded roof over a very wide pool or an aquatics complex, with the valleys as the drainage lines.

Cantilever over the deck

Where only the deck and stands need cover and the water itself can stay open.

For a private garden pool, a gazebo sun shade or shade sail may be enough; for a full aquatics venue, see auditorium & stadium roofs.

Where They Are Used

Pool canopy applications

Anywhere a pool needs to be usable in strong sun and the monsoon without an enclosed, air-conditioned hall.

Private & villa pools

A sail or small barrel vault that keeps a home pool usable through the middle of the day.

Club & society pools

A barrel vault over the lap pool and the deck, with the surrounds left open.

Competition & academy pools

A roof over the pool and the spectator stands, with even glare-free light for timing and coaching.

School & campus pools

An all-weather cover that extends the swimming season without an enclosed hall.

Hotel & resort pools

A shaded, sheltered poolside that still feels like an outdoor space.

Aquatics complexes

A large ridge-and-valley or multi-bay roof over several pools and their decks.

Specification & Options

What is specified on a pool roof

The pool environment drives the specification: corrosion protection, translucency and drainage away from the water.

Membrane

Membrane options

Pool roofs use a coated architectural fabric — PVC or PVDF for most projects, PTFE-glass for a permanent competition venue. Translucency and a cleanable surface matter more here than colour.

Standard

PVC-coated polyester

The most economical choice and the widest colour range; blocks the rain, hail and almost all UV. PVC fabric →

Upgrade

PVDF-lacquered PVC

The same base with a tougher top-coat that stays cleaner under dust and pollution. PVDF fabric →

Premium

PTFE-coated glass

Non-combustible and near self-cleaning, with the longest service life. PTFE fabric →

A full comparison of the fabrics — translucency, fire class, typical life — is on the membrane materials page.

Design, Engineering & Build

How it is engineered and built

The governing load

A pool roof is a light structure over a wide span, so wind uplift governs. The barrel vault is pre-stressed over its arch so the membrane stays taut, and the steel and foundations are sized for the site’s design wind pressure under IS 875 Part 3.

Detailed for chlorinated air

Warm, humid, chlorine-laden air is aggressive — so the steel is hot-dip galvanised and painted, and cables and fittings are stainless.

Steel & foundations to code

The frame is designed to IS 800 and the footings to IS 456, checked for uplift and overturning. Galvanising to IS 4759 / IS 2629 for corrosion protection.

Built off-site, raised fast

Steel is cut, welded and galvanised in the workshop and the membrane is cut and welded into panels, while the footings are cast on site. On-site work is then quick and low-disruption.

One accountable team

Survey, 3D design, fabrication, installation and tensioning are all Ekra Decor’s own team, with a handover pack of drawings, load report, stability certificate and material certificates.

Cost

What drives the cost

Cost is not a fixed rate per square foot — two structures of the same size can differ widely. The main factors:

Covered area Clear span Structural form Structure height Steel tonnage Membrane grade Local wind zone Soil & foundation type Drainage & gutters Integrated lighting Site access & craneage Working around live operations Coverage (pool / deck / stands) Corrosion specification

A roof over the pool, deck and stands costs more than one over the pool alone. Send your pool layout for a design direction and an itemised quote; see the cost guide.

Ownership

Looking after the structure

  • Cleaning — a periodic wash; PVDF and PTFE surfaces largely self-clean in rain.
  • Membrane & seams — check for abrasion, coating wear and any seam lifting, especially at high-stress corners.
  • Cable tension — a first re-tension after the initial season, then a periodic check.
  • Steel & connections — inspect the galvanising and the connections, particularly at ground level.
  • Drainage — clear the gutters, valleys and outlets before the monsoon.
  • Corrosion watch — inspect fixings and cable ends more often in the humid pool environment.
Common Questions

Swimming pool tensile structure FAQ

The questions people ask before commissioning a tensile roof over a pool.

To take the glare and hard shadow off the water, shade the deck and the stands, and keep out rain and wind-blown debris — all without darkening the space or the running cost of an enclosed, air-conditioned hall.

No. A translucent membrane diffuses the daylight, so the light on the water is even and shadow-free — better for lane swimming and timing than an open pool in direct sun.

Open at the sides by default, so it stays naturally ventilated. A more enclosed form has vents or a raised eave designed in to move the humid air.

The steel is hot-dip galvanised and painted, and the cables and fittings are stainless — the specification steps up because pool-hall air is aggressive.

A barrel vault suits a lap or competition pool — it spans the poolside and repeats along the length. A sail suits a smaller private pool — lighter, cheaper and quicker to install.

Yes — a common configuration is one roof over the pool, the deck and the tiered seating, so a crowd at a gala is sheltered alongside the swimmers.

There is no fixed rate. Cost depends on the span, the form, how much is covered (pool / deck / stands), the membrane grade and the corrosion specification. Send your pool layout for an itemised quote.

Periodic cleaning, a membrane and cable check, a first re-tension after the initial season, and more frequent inspection of fixings and cable ends because of the humid environment.
