**Hazratbal Dargah, Srinagar — under snow**Ekra Decor's 2,600 m² courtyard shade at Hazratbal Dargah, with the canopies and the courtyard under snow. Snow sits still where wind does not, which is why the geometry in Jammu & Kashmir is steeper than it would be in Goa.

Retractable Roofs

Membrane roofs that open. Stills cannot show the thing that matters most — whether the fabric stays taut through the whole travel.

**Stacked in the parked position**Fully retracted, the bays nest at one end. That stack length is part of the design.

**A yard under a retractable cover**A working yard roofed so it can be opened again — the usual reason a client wants movement rather than a fixed roof.

**Spanning between two buildings**A retractable roof closing the gap between existing blocks, which is where the fixing detail gets difficult.

**Over sports courts**Courts covered so they stay playable in rain and heat, with the roof still able to open.

Motorised retractable fabric roof over a restaurant courtyard with planted walls — A motorised fabric roof over a restaurant courtyard. The frame is fixed and only the covering travels, which is what lets a dining space stay open in the evening and shut when the weather turns.

Retractable fabric pergola folding open over a patio — A retractable pergola opening over a patio. The fabric gathers into folds as it retracts rather than rolling, which is what keeps the covering flat and the tension even when it is run back out.

Arched retractable polycarbonate roof opening over a terrace — The same terrace roof opening. The covering here is polycarbonate sheet on a steel arch, not fabric — the bays slide over one another and stack at one end.
