Port Blair Tensile Structure

Conical tensile canopies over a paved waterfront area at Port Blair, capital of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands — about 121 m² (1,300 sq ft) of tensioned fabric on a galvanised steel frame, built by Ekra Decor in 15 days.

Project Overview

5archive photographs
from Ekra Decor’s
project records

Ekra Decor built a set of conical tensile canopies at Port Blair, the capital of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. The archive photograph shows conical fabric peaks over a paved waterfront area with turquoise water visible behind — a promenade, jetty forecourt or public seating area.

Small conical canopies are a common choice for a waterfront: they give shade and rain cover at seating and gathering points, they are open on every side so they keep the breeze and the view, and their peaked form looks at home against sea and sky. At about 121 m² total this is a cluster of small units rather than one large roof.

The setting is a plausible read of the photograph rather than a confirmed detail. The archive records about 121 m² and a 15-day build — a fast installation, which fits a set of small prefabricated units.

Conical waterfront canopies

A cluster of small tensioned cones over a paved seaside area.

Shade with the view kept

Open on every side, so the canopies shelter without blocking the sea or the breeze.

Self-draining peaks

Each cone sheds rain straight off its slope — useful in an island monsoon.

Island specification

A galvanised frame and a UV- and salt-stable membrane for a marine environment.

The Brief

Shade points on a waterfront

A public waterfront needs shade where people stop — at seating, at a jetty forecourt, at a viewpoint — without anything that blocks the sea view or the breeze that makes the spot pleasant. A set of small conical canopies delivers exactly that: targeted cover at each point, open on all sides.

Ekra Decor delivered the structures as a complete job: survey, 3D design of the conical units and their frames, fabrication, and installation and tensioning, over about 121 m² in 15 days.

Design & Engineering

Small cones, detailed for an island

Each canopy is a small cone — the membrane pulled up to a central high point and down to perimeter anchors, forming a steep radial double curvature that pre-stresses the fabric so it stays taut and sheds rain straight off its slope. A cluster of them covers the seating and gathering points while keeping the spaces between open.

On an island the specification is what matters. The steel is hot-dip galvanised, exposed fittings are stainless, and the membrane is a PVDF- or PTFE-coated fabric chosen for its resistance to relentless UV and salt. Ekra Decor designs the steel to IS 800 and checks the canopies for wind loading to the applicable Indian codes — the Andamans are exposed to strong maritime winds — with the anchor foundations sized for uplift.

Fabrication & Installation

Prefabricated on the mainland, assembled on site

Each cone is cut as radial panels and welded into a finished piece, and the masts, rings and fittings are fabricated and galvanised, so what ships to the islands is a set of prepared units rather than raw material — important given the logistics of building far from the mainland.

On site the crew casts the small foundations, erects and plumbs each mast, and spreads and tensions each cone. With prefabricated units and minimal groundworks, the set went up in 15 days.

The Result

Sheltered spots along the water

Port Blair’s waterfront gained a set of small shade canopies at its seating and gathering points — shelter from the sun and the island rain, with the sea view and the breeze intact. Built to a marine specification, they need only cleaning and periodic checks.

Ekra Decor builds conical canopies and pavilions for public and waterfront projects. See more finished work on the projects page, or read about tensile structures in Port Blair.

Common Questions

About this project & building something similar

Where is this project located?

Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

How large is the covered area?

≈121 m² (1,300 sq ft), per Ekra Decor's project records.

How long did this project take to build?

≈15 days from start to finish, per Ekra Decor's project records — in line with the standard 10 to 15 day fabrication and 3 to 7 day on-site installation timeline used across most projects.

Are there real photographs of this project?

Yes — 5 photographs from Ekra Decor's own project archive appear in the gallery above, not a stock or illustrative image.

Can Ekra Decor build something similar for my site?

Yes — every project starts with a site survey and a custom 3D design tailored to your space, not a fixed template. Get in touch to discuss a similar structure for your own site.

What membrane material would a structure like this be built in?

The choice depends on span, climate and intended lifespan. PVC-coated polyester is the most cost-effective option, with a 10–15 year service life. PVDF-coated polyester adds a self-cleaning top layer and pushes that to 15–20 years. PTFE-coated fibreglass is a permanent, non-combustible membrane with a life measured in decades, and ETFE film is used where an ultra-light, highly transparent roof is needed.

Is the structure engineered to Indian standards?

Yes. Wind, rain and — where relevant — snow and seismic loads are analysed to the applicable IS codes, and the steelwork is designed to IS 800. The membrane is form-found so its stresses stay balanced in double curvature, and the foundations are sized against uplift and overturning rather than gravity alone — the governing case for a lightweight tensile roof.

What warranty and documentation come with the structure?

Up to a 10-year written warranty on the membrane, plus as-built drawings, original mill certificates for the membrane and steel, a structural stability certificate and an operation & maintenance manual on handover. An annual maintenance contract covering inspection and re-tensioning is optional.

How much maintenance does a tensile structure need?

Very little — a periodic wash to remove surface dirt, and an annual check of cable tension and bolt torque. PVDF and PTFE membranes are largely self-cleaning, so rain keeps them looking new. We can carry this out under an annual maintenance contract if you prefer.
