Sizing a parking structure to the vehicles it covers
The vehicle decides the structure. A shed sized for hatchbacks will not work for a bus, and a bus shelter is not just a taller car shed — the taller and longer the vehicle, the bigger the wind load on the roof and the heavier the frame and footings.
Clear heights and bay sizes
- Cars — 2.5 × 5 m bay, about 2.1 m clear edge height.
- SUVs and pickups — wider bay, 2.3 to 2.5 m clear height.
- Vans, LCVs and ambulances — 3.0 to 3.5 m clear height, wider bays.
- Buses and coaches — 3.8 to 4.5 m clear height, 12 to 15 m long bays, longer spans.
- Trucks and trailers — 4.5 m and up, heavier foundations, wide turning aisles.
- Tractors and farm equipment — tall, wide, open-sided.
Why height costs money
A taller structure presents a larger face to the wind, so the columns, connections and footings all grow. It is usually cheaper to keep the cover to the height actually needed than to over-provide “just in case”.

Continuous multi-bay runs, marked bays, and drive-through layouts so vehicles are not reversing under the structure all day.

Vehicle-parking canopy layouts
The vehicle sets everything. A bus or a tipper needs a much greater clear height than a car, which means a taller structure, a heavier frame and a longer span — all of which the design has to carry.
High cantilever
A single tall column line behind the vehicles; the roof reaches forward over long buses or trucks with a clear front for manoeuvring.
Portal / arch span
Rigid steel portals or arches carry a wide clear span where cantilevering the full depth is not efficient.
Ridge-and-valley grid
A folded roof covers a large logistics or bus yard in both directions, with valley drainage.
Drive-through bay
Open at both ends for vehicles that pull straight through — a wash bay, an inspection line, a loading dock.

What is specified on a vehicle-parking canopy
A vehicle canopy is engineered up from the vehicle: the clear height drives the frame, the frame drives the foundations.

Membrane options
Vehicle canopies use PVC or PVDF for most work. PTFE-glass is chosen where the structure is permanent or a fire class applies — for example a covered bus station.
PVC-coated polyester
The most economical choice and the widest colour range; blocks the rain, hail and almost all UV. PVC fabric →

How it is engineered and built
The governing load
A taller structure catches far more wind, so uplift and overturning are large. The frame, cables and foundations are all sized for the site’s design wind pressure under IS 875 Part 3, with the steel to IS 800 and footings to IS 456.
Clear height is the cost driver
Every extra metre of height adds wind load, steel weight and foundation size — so the height is set to the vehicles actually using the canopy, not a generous round number.
Steel & foundations to code
The frame is designed to IS 800 and the footings to IS 456, checked for uplift and overturning. Galvanising to IS 4759 / IS 2629 for corrosion protection.
Built off-site, raised fast
Steel is cut, welded and galvanised in the workshop and the membrane is cut and welded into panels, while the footings are cast on site. On-site work is then quick and low-disruption.

What drives the cost
Cost is not a fixed rate per square foot — two structures of the same size can differ widely. The main factors:

Looking after the structure
- Cleaning — a periodic wash; PVDF surfaces largely self-clean in rain, plain PVC benefits from an occasional wipe-down of dust and tree debris.
- Membrane check — look over the fabric and seams for abrasion or lifting, especially at the edge cables and the corners.
- Cable tension — a first re-tension after the initial season, then a periodic check.
- Drainage — clear the edge gutters, valley gutters and column downpipes of leaves before the monsoon.
- Steel & bolts — inspect the galvanising and the connections, particularly at ground level.
