Pergola Gazebo Canopy Manufacturer
A pergola read in tensile fabric — a clean rectilinear steel frame with a tensioned architectural membrane top instead of timber slats or aluminium louvres, so it is genuinely weatherproof, not just shade. Built by Ekra Decor for terraces, restaurants and garden rooms.
- Rectilinear pergola frame
- Tensioned fabric top — genuinely weatherproof
- Wall-attached or free-standing
- Engineered to IS 875, IS 800 & IS 456

Pergola looks, gazebo cover: the hybrid
A pergola gazebo canopy keeps a pergola’s open beam lines but stretches a tensile membrane over the top — so the space is usable in sun and rain instead of only in good weather.
Why combine them
A bare pergola gives dappled light but no rain cover and little real shade. Adding a membrane over the frame turns it into a proper outdoor room while keeping the architectural feel that a solid roof would lose.
Fixed or retractable
A fixed membrane is simpler and cheaper. A retractable membrane runs on tracks along the beams and folds open to the sky in good weather — many with a rain and wind sensor that closes it automatically.
Waterproofing
The membrane is shaped with a slight fall and the junctions to the beams are detailed so water runs to a gutter on one edge, never onto the deck below.
Frame and fabric
A powder-coated aluminium or steel frame with a PVC or PVDF membrane.
Where they go
Restaurant and cafe terraces, rooftop lounges, villa courtyards and hotel poolside bars.

Pergola canopy configurations
A pergola gazebo keeps the pergola’s clean rectangular geometry but swaps the slatted top for a tensioned membrane, so the space underneath is dry, not dappled.
Flat-tensioned top
A shallow hypar stretched across the pergola frame — reads as a flat pergola roof but is pre-stressed so it drains and does not pond.
Mono-pitch
The membrane falls one way across the frame to a boxed gutter — the simplest weathertight pergola top.
Barrel-vault top
A gentle arch over the frame for a softer line and a clear fall to both eaves.
Wall-attached lean-to
Fixed to the building on one side and on columns on the other — the usual terrace and restaurant configuration.
For peaked and conical forms, see gazebo tensile structures; for open shade only, fabric shade structures.
What is specified on a gazebo canopy
A pergola canopy is specified like a small tensile roof on a rectilinear frame — the top is still form-found so it drains, even when it looks flat.
| Element | Options |
|---|---|
| Frame style | Clean rectangular steel posts and beams — the pergola look — rather than masts and cables |
| Top | Flat-tensioned hypar, mono-pitch, or a gentle barrel vault |
| Form | Conical, hypar, tiered dome, or multi-peak — chosen from the footprint and the setting |
| Membrane | PVC-coated polyester for most work; PVDF for a longer-lasting finish and colour hold; PTFE-glass for a permanent, non-combustible roof |
| Colour | Across the PVC and PVDF ranges; PTFE-glass is essentially white |
| Frame | Galvanised steel mast, rings and perimeter; painted or stainless-detailed where exposed |
| Sides | Open on all sides by default; screens or roll-down blinds can be added |
| Drainage | Off the cone or dome to defined low points, piped away where needed |
| Foundations | Pad footings to IS 456, sized for wind uplift and mast compression |
| Lighting | Uplighting onto the membrane for a soft glow after dark; wiring concealed in the mast |
| Scope | Survey, 3D design, fabrication, installation and tensioning — one in-house team |
General membrane figures — life, translucency, fire class — are manufacturer values for the material type, set out on the membrane materials page.
Membrane options
A pergola canopy is usually PVC or PVDF. A light translucent membrane keeps the terrace bright; a heavier opaque one gives full shade and a more roof-like feel.
PVC-coated polyester
The most economical choice and the widest colour range; blocks the rain, hail and almost all UV. PVC fabric →
PVDF-lacquered PVC
The same base with a tougher top-coat that stays cleaner under dust and pollution. PVDF fabric →
PTFE-coated glass
Non-combustible and near self-cleaning, with the longest service life. PTFE fabric →
A full comparison of the fabrics — translucency, fire class, typical life — is on the membrane materials page.
How it is engineered and built
The governing load
A pergola top that looks flat is still a tensile roof — it is form-found with just enough curvature to stay taut and drain, never truly flat. The frame is designed to IS 800 and the footings to IS 456, with wind uplift the governing case under IS 875 Part 3.
Steel & foundations to code
The frame is designed to IS 800 and the footings to IS 456, checked for uplift and overturning. Galvanising to IS 4759 / IS 2629 for corrosion protection.
Built off-site, raised fast
Steel is cut, welded and galvanised in the workshop and the membrane is cut and welded into panels, while the footings are cast on site. On-site work is then quick and low-disruption.
One accountable team
Survey, 3D design, fabrication, installation and tensioning are all Ekra Decor’s own team, with a handover pack of drawings, load report, stability certificate and material certificates.
What drives the cost
Cost is not a fixed rate per square foot — two structures of the same size can differ widely. The main factors:
A wall-attached mono-pitch is the most economical; a free-standing framed top with gutters costs more. Send your terrace for a quote; see the cost guide.
Looking after the structure
- Cleaning — a periodic wash; PVDF and PTFE surfaces largely self-clean in rain.
- Membrane & seams — check the fabric for abrasion or coating wear, especially at the peak rings and corner plates.
- Cable tension — a first re-tension after the initial season, then a periodic check of the cables and turnbuckles.
- Steel & connections — inspect the galvanising and the mast and ring connections.

Pergola gazebo canopy FAQ
The questions people ask about a pergola with a tensioned-fabric top.
A pergola-style steel frame — clean rectangular posts and beams — with a tensioned architectural-fabric top instead of timber slats or aluminium louvres. It is a genuinely weatherproof roof, not just a shade pattern.
A traditional pergola has an open or slatted top that gives dappled shade and lets rain through. A pergola gazebo canopy has a tensioned membrane top that sheds rain to a gutter, so the space underneath stays dry.
It looks flat, but a tensioned membrane is never truly flat — it is form-found with just enough curvature to stay taut and to drain. A dead-flat fabric roof would pond and flap.
Yes — a wall-attached lean-to, fixed to the building on one side and on columns on the other, is the usual terrace and restaurant configuration.
Weatherproof. The coated membrane sheds rain to a boxed gutter and blocks almost all UV. Side screens can be added for wind-driven rain or privacy.
PVC or PVDF for most projects. A light translucent membrane keeps the terrace bright; a heavier opaque one gives full shade and a more roof-like feel.
There is no fixed rate. Cost depends on the footprint, the top style, whether it is wall-attached, the membrane and the wind zone. Send your terrace layout for an itemised quote.
Periodic cleaning, a membrane and fixing check, a first re-tension after the initial season, and keeping the gutter and downpipes clear.
