Party Hall Domed Tensile Structure

A function hall needs a big, clear, welcoming volume — room for a gathering with nothing structural in the way, comfortable light, and enough architectural character that it feels like a venue rather than a marquee. It also has to be genuinely weatherproof, because the events it hosts are booked in advance and cannot be moved.

Ekra Decor’s scope covered the dome end to end: 3D design of the tiered geometry and its radial steel frame, fabrication of both, and installation and tensioning of the membrane on site.

A tensile dome is built around a radial skeleton: curved steel ribs run from a compression ring at the apex down to a tension ring at the base, and the membrane is stretched over them and pre-stressed so it stays taut between the ribs. The apex ring pushes out, the base ring pulls in, and the two balance each other, so the dome is largely self-contained and puts mostly vertical load into its supports.

Tiering the dome means building it as two or more of these shells, each slightly smaller and set higher than the last, with an overlapping gap between them. That gap is the clever part: it is detailed so rain is thrown clear on the outside while daylight and air pass through on the inside. Ekra Decor form-finds the membrane in 3D, designs the steel to IS 800, and checks the dome for wind and rain loading to the applicable Indian codes.

The membrane is a coated architectural fabric selected for translucency and a long, cleanable service life, so the hall stays bright and the roof keeps its finish.

The rib segments and the compression and tension rings are fabricated and hot-dip galvanised in the workshop, and the membrane is cut to its radial pattern and welded into gores. The frame is assembled on site — base ring first, ribs raised and closed at the apex ring — then each membrane tier is lifted over its ribs and tensioned.

The work is staged around the garden setting, protecting the planting and paving, and the dome is handed over as a finished, tensioned structure.

The venue gained a domed hall with a clear floor, gentle daylight and a ceremonial shape, weathertight through the year but open enough at the rim to stay comfortable. A tensioned dome needs only periodic cleaning and a routine check of its rings and cable tensions.
