Shading a restaurant terrace
A restaurant’s outdoor seating is only worth having if it is usable — shaded at lunch, dry when it rains, and pleasant to sit in. The brief for a terrace canopy is to deliver that without closing the space in: diners still want daylight, moving air and an outlook, and the operator wants a structure that can flex as the layout changes.
Ekra Decor delivered the canopy as a turnkey job — survey, 3D design, fabrication of the galvanised steel and the membrane, and installation and tensioning — over about 700 m² and roughly 35 days.

How an inverted umbrella works
An inverted umbrella turns the usual canopy shape upside down. Instead of a high centre and low edges, the membrane is lifted at the perimeter on arms cantilevering from a single central column and pulled down to a funnel at that column. The result is a shallow inward-sloping cone that pre-stresses the fabric into double curvature — taut, wind-stable and self-draining — while collecting all its rainwater at one point.
That geometry is why the form is so practical. Each umbrella stands on one foundation and one column, so a canopy of any size is just a grid of identical modules, and the rainwater from every module is piped away inside its column with no visible gutters. Ekra Decor form-finds each unit in 3D, designs the steel to IS 800, and checks it for wind loading to the applicable Indian codes; the cantilevered canopy makes wind uplift the governing case, and the single foundation is sized for the overturning that comes with it.
Fabrication & Installation
Prefabricated modules, quick to install
The columns, cantilever arms and funnels are fabricated and hot-dip galvanised in the workshop, and each membrane unit is cut and welded to pattern, so an inverted-umbrella canopy arrives as a set of repeating kits. On site the work is efficient: cast each foundation, stand and plumb the column, fit the arms, then spread and tension the membrane.
Because the foundations are single points rather than a continuous grid of footings, groundworks are minimal and the disruption to a working restaurant is short — here the canopy was completed in about 35 days.
The Result
A terrace that works in any weather
The restaurant gained a shaded, sheltered outdoor dining area that stays open and airy, with rainwater handled invisibly and a layout that can be adjusted or extended. Maintenance is limited to cleaning the membrane and clearing the column drains.

What warranty and documentation come with the structure?
Up to a 10-year written warranty on the membrane, plus as-built drawings, original mill certificates for the membrane and steel, a structural stability certificate and an operation & maintenance manual on handover. An annual maintenance contract covering inspection and re-tensioning is optional.
How much maintenance does a tensile structure need?
Very little — a periodic wash to remove surface dirt, and an annual check of cable tension and bolt torque. PVDF and PTFE membranes are largely self-cleaning, so rain keeps them looking new. We can carry this out under an annual maintenance contract if you prefer.
