“Covered” means a weathertight roof, not just shade

An open shade blocks the sun and most of the rain. A covered car parking structure is designed and detailed as an actual roof — welded seams, proper falls, gutters and downpipes — so the cars underneath stay genuinely dry through a monsoon.

The steelwork

Hot-dip galvanised, typically 86 microns or more, because the frame lives in an open, wet environment for decades. Cut ends and site welds are re-coated so there is no bare steel to start rusting.

The membrane

PVC-coated polyester with high-frequency welded seams — welded, not stitched, so the joints do not leak or unpick. A PVDF topcoat adds a self-cleaning surface and a longer life.

Loads

Designed for the site’s wind zone under IS 875 Part 3, plus hail, and — in the north — snow building up along the valleys.

Options

  • Side infill panels or roll-down blinds on the prevailing-weather side.
  • End gables to close off a run.
  • Integrated gutters and rainwater downpipes to a site drain.

It costs more than an open shade, and it is worth it where vehicles sit for days — society and hospital parking, showroom stock, staff car parks. For a lighter open canopy see car parking tensile shades; for premium sites see designer car parking. Ask for a specification.

Configurations

Covered-parking layouts

A covered car park is defined by its drainage: every part of the roof falls to a gutter, and the gutters are piped away, so nothing drips onto the vehicles or the aisle.

Back-to-back “butterfly”

Two rows of bays meet at a raised central ridge and drain to a valley gutter between them. The standard covered layout for an open lot.

Ridge-and-valley grid

Repeated ridges and valleys cover a large lot in both directions; the valleys are the drainage lines, piped down through the columns.

Mono-pitch enclosed bay

A single slope draining to a boxed gutter along the low edge — used against a boundary or a building.

Barrel vault

A continuous arched roof over a long parking row; the curve sheds water to gutters at both eaves.

For an open cantilever shade — lighter, cheaper, open at the front — see car parking tensile shades. For larger vehicles, vehicle parking structures.

Specification & Options

What is specified on a covered car park

There is no single fixed spec — structure, membrane and drainage are recommended after the site, layout and local weather are reviewed.

Covered car-park tensile roof — specification choices
ElementOptions
StructureButterfly (back-to-back), ridge-and-valley grid, mono-pitch, or barrel vault
MembranePVC-coated polyester for most work; PVDF for a longer-lasting finish; PTFE-glass for a permanent, non-combustible roof
FrameStructural or mild steel, hot-dip galvanised; painted or stainless-detailed for coastal and industrial sites
DrainageValley and eaves gutters sized to the local rainfall intensity, with overflow routes; downpipes concealed inside the columns
Clear heightSet from the vehicles; a taller roof catches more wind and needs a heavier frame
CoverageA few bays up to a multi-hundred-bay lot
FoundationsIsolated footings to IS 456, sized mainly for wind uplift
LightingFittings on the steel; wiring concealed in the columns

General membrane figures — life, translucency, fire class — are manufacturer values for the material type, set out on the membrane materials page. The engineered values for a given roof come out of the structural design for the site and loads.

Membrane

Membrane options

Covered parking is almost always a PVC-based membrane. PTFE is chosen where the roof has to be permanent or meet a high fire class.

Standard

PVC-coated polyester

The most economical choice and the widest colour range; blocks the rain, hail and almost all UV. PVC fabric →

Upgrade

PVDF-lacquered PVC

The same base with a tougher top-coat that stays cleaner under dust and pollution. PVDF fabric →

Premium

PTFE-coated glass

Non-combustible and near self-cleaning, with the longest service life. PTFE fabric →

A full comparison of the fabrics — translucency, fire class, typical life — is on the membrane materials page.

Design, Engineering & Build

How it is engineered and built

The governing load

A tensile roof weighs almost nothing, so wind uplift is the design case, not gravity. The membrane is form-found into double curvature so it stays taut, and the frame and footings are sized for the site’s design wind pressure under IS 875 Part 3.

Drainage is engineered first

On a covered park the falls, valley lines, gutter sizes and outlet positions are set during form-finding — they cannot be added afterward.

Steel & foundations to code

The frame is designed to IS 800 and the footings to IS 456, checked for uplift and overturning. Galvanising to IS 4759 / IS 2629 for corrosion protection.

Built off-site, raised fast

Steel is cut, welded and galvanised in the workshop and the membrane is cut and welded into panels, while the footings are cast on site. On-site work is then quick and low-disruption.

One accountable team

Survey, 3D design, fabrication, installation and tensioning are all Ekra Decor’s own team, with a handover pack of drawings, load report, stability certificate and material certificates.

Cost

What drives the cost

Cost is not a fixed rate per square foot — two structures of the same size can differ widely. The main factors:

Number of bays Layout Span between columns Clear height Membrane grade Steel tonnage Local wind zone Soil & foundation type Drainage & gutters Integrated lighting Site access & craneage Working around a live car park

Send your parking layout for a design direction and an itemised quote. More on what moves the number is in the tensile structure cost guide.

Ownership

Looking after the structure

  • Cleaning — a periodic wash; PVDF surfaces largely self-clean in rain, plain PVC benefits from an occasional wipe-down of dust and tree debris.
  • Membrane check — look over the fabric and seams for abrasion or lifting, especially at the edge cables and the corners.
  • Cable tension — a first re-tension after the initial season, then a periodic check.
  • Drainage — clear the edge gutters, valley gutters and column downpipes of leaves before the monsoon.
  • Steel & bolts — inspect the galvanising and the connections, particularly at ground level.
Common Questions

Covered car parking FAQ

The questions people ask before commissioning a covered car park.

A weathertight tensile roof over parking — a sealed PVC or PVDF membrane on a galvanised steel frame, with gutters and downpipes, so vehicles stay dry in any weather. Unlike an open cantilever shade, it has no open front edge.

A car-park shade is an open cantilever that sheds rain to its front edge — lighter and cheaper. A covered car park drains every part of the roof to gutters that are piped away, so nothing runs off onto the vehicles.

The roof falls to valley gutters between rows and eaves gutters at the edges, sized to the local rainfall intensity, with overflow routes. The gutters are piped down concealed inside the columns.

PVC-coated polyester for most projects, PVDF-lacquered for a cleaner finish that lasts longer, and PTFE-coated glass where a permanent, non-combustible roof is required.

Yes. Steel and membrane are fabricated off-site, so on-site work is casting footings and erecting the frame. The lot is worked in sections and handed back as each is finished.

Isolated concrete footings, designed to IS 456 and sized mainly for wind uplift because the roof weighs so little.

There is no fixed rate per bay or per square foot. Cost depends on the number of bays, the layout, the span, the membrane grade, the wind zone, the soil and site access. Send your layout for an itemised quote.

The galvanised steel frame lasts decades; the membrane is the wearing part — manufacturers typically quote 15–20 years for PVC, longer for PVDF. Maintenance is periodic cleaning, a membrane and cable check, and clearing the gutters before the monsoon.
