Getting the most two-wheelers under the least steel

Two-wheeler parking is a density problem. A single car bay holds three or four bikes, and bikes only need about 2 m of headroom — so a well-planned two-wheeler shed is shorter, lighter and cheaper per vehicle than a car shade covering the same ground.

The bay

Roughly 0.8 to 1.0 m wide and 2.0 to 2.2 m long per two-wheeler. Herringbone (angled) rows pack even tighter and make it easier to wheel a bike in and out.

Low clear height

2.0 m at the edge is plenty. Keeping the structure low is the single biggest saving — less steel, smaller foundations, less wind load.

Layout

Single or double rows against a boundary wall, or long continuous runs along the perimeter of a society, office campus or college. Wheel stands and channels can be cast into the paving under the cover.

What the cover actually protects

A parked bike in the sun means a scorching seat and fuel expanding in the tank — the two things riders complain about. The membrane blocks the sun and keeps the bike dry; light colours keep the seat usable.

Lighting

More important than for cars — riders need to find their bike and feel safe at night. Fittings mount to the frame with wiring in the columns.

Configurations

Two-wheeler shed layouts

Two-wheeler parking is long and thin — rows of bikes at right angles to an aisle — which is a natural fit for a barrel vault: one curved bay, repeated.

Single-row barrel vault

A curved membrane over one row of bikes at right angles to an access aisle; columns on one edge.

Back-to-back double row

Two rows of two-wheelers share a central column line and a valley gutter — the most bikes per metre of frame.

Repeating multi-bay

Identical barrel-vault bays repeat the length of a plant frontage or campus edge.

Lean-to against a building

A mono-pitch canopy fixed to a wall where a free-standing frame will not fit.

For car parking, see car parking tensile shades; for cars fully enclosed, covered car parking.

Specification & Options

What is specified on a two-wheeler shed

A two-wheeler shed is a lighter structure than a car canopy — lower, shorter spans, a simpler repeating frame.

Two-wheeler parking shed — specification choices
ElementOptions
StructureSingle-row or back-to-back barrel vault, repeating multi-bay, or a wall-fixed lean-to
MembranePVC-coated polyester for most work; PVDF for a cleaner, longer-lasting finish
FrameLight galvanised steel bents, spaced for the row length; painted where the site is industrial or coastal
Clear heightEnough for a rider to wheel a bike in and out — lower than a car canopy, so the frame is lighter
CoverageA few dozen bikes up to a plant-wide two-wheeler park
DrainageTo the low eaves, or a valley gutter between rows, piped down the columns
FoundationsIsolated footings to IS 456, sized for wind uplift

Membrane

Membrane options

Two-wheeler sheds are built in PVC or PVDF. A light colour keeps the underside cooler; the cover protects seats, plastics and paint from sun and dew.

Standard

PVC-coated polyester

The most economical choice and the widest colour range; blocks the rain, hail and almost all UV. PVC fabric →

Upgrade

PVDF-lacquered PVC

The same base with a tougher top-coat that stays cleaner under dust and pollution. PVDF fabric →

Premium

PTFE-coated glass

Non-combustible and near self-cleaning, with the longest service life. PTFE fabric →

A full comparison of the fabrics — translucency, fire class, typical life — is on the membrane materials page.

Design, Engineering & Build

How it is engineered and built

The governing load

The roof weighs almost nothing, so wind uplift is the design case. The repeating barrel-vault bents are pre-stressed over their arch so the membrane cannot flap, and the frame and footings are sized for the site’s design wind pressure under IS 875 Part 3.

Steel & foundations to code

The frame is designed to IS 800 and the footings to IS 456, checked for uplift and overturning. Galvanising to IS 4759 / IS 2629 for corrosion protection.

Built off-site, raised fast

Steel is cut, welded and galvanised in the workshop and the membrane is cut and welded into panels, while the footings are cast on site. On-site work is then quick and low-disruption.

One accountable team

Survey, 3D design, fabrication, installation and tensioning are all Ekra Decor’s own team, with a handover pack of drawings, load report, stability certificate and material certificates.

Cost

What drives the cost

Cost is not a fixed rate per square foot — two structures of the same size can differ widely. The main factors:

Number of bays Row layout Bay span Membrane grade Steel per metre Local wind zone Soil & foundations Drainage Lighting Site access Working around a live yard

Ownership

Looking after the structure

  • Cleaning — a periodic wash; PVDF surfaces largely self-clean in rain, plain PVC benefits from an occasional wipe-down of dust and tree debris.
  • Membrane check — look over the fabric and seams for abrasion or lifting, especially at the edge cables and the corners.
  • Cable tension — a first re-tension after the initial season, then a periodic check.
  • Drainage — clear the edge gutters, valley gutters and column downpipes of leaves before the monsoon.
  • Steel & bolts — inspect the galvanising and the connections, particularly at ground level.
Common Questions

Two-wheeler parking shed FAQ

The questions people ask before commissioning a two-wheeler parking canopy.

A barrel-vault tensile canopy over motorcycle and scooter parking — a curved PVC or PVDF membrane on a light repeating steel frame — that keeps sun, rain and dew off parked two-wheelers.

Two-wheeler parking is long rows at right angles to an aisle, which suits a curved membrane spanning the bay and simply repeating along its length. The frame is a series of identical arched bents.

It is lighter and lower — shorter spans, less clear height, a simpler frame — because bikes are small. See car parking tensile shades for cars.

Anything from a few dozen bikes to a plant-wide two-wheeler park; the barrel-vault bay just repeats to the length needed.

PVC-coated polyester for most projects, PVDF where the finish must stay clean for longer under dust. A light colour keeps the underside cooler.

To the low eaves on a single row, or into a valley gutter between back-to-back rows, then piped down inside a column.

There is no fixed rate per bike or per square foot. Cost depends on the number of bays, the layout, the span, the membrane and the wind zone. Send your area for an itemised quote.

Yes. The steel bents and membrane are fabricated off-site, so on-site work is casting footings and erecting the repeating frame, done in sections around site traffic.
