A single-mast cone is one of the simplest ways to shade a courtyard. One mast at the centre lifts the membrane to a high point, and the fabric falls away from it to anchor points around the courtyard edge, so the whole span is covered with just one foundation in the middle of the space. Rain runs straight down the cone and off the low perimeter, away from the arcades.

The archive records about 1,115 m² and a two-month build. This is a separate installation from Ekra Decor’s Vikram Solar Kolkata project, which is an industrial parking and walkway canopy, not a courtyard shade. The specific building has not been confirmed.

The Brief

Shading a courtyard from the middle

An open courtyard ringed by a building is usable space going to waste if it bakes in the sun and floods in the monsoon. The brief for a shade over it is to cover the whole area, keep the floor as clear as possible, and drain cleanly without dumping water into the surrounding arcades — all while working inside an occupied building with limited access.

Ekra Decor delivered the structure as a turnkey job: survey and setting-out within the courtyard, 3D form-finding and structural design, fabrication of the galvanised steel mast and the membrane, and installation and tensioning, over about 1,115 m² in roughly two months.

Design & Engineering

The engineering of a centre-mast cone

A centre-mast cone puts all the vertical load into one point and all the horizontal pull into a ring of perimeter anchors. The membrane is form-found so it hangs in a steep radial double curvature — taut in every direction, stable under wind uplift, and steep enough to shed a Kolkata monsoon straight off its slope.

The single mast carries a large compression force, so its foundation is a substantial pad or pile designed for that plus the overturning from asymmetric wind; the perimeter anchors are designed for uplift and tied into the surrounding building’s structure. Ekra Decor designs the steelwork to IS 800 and takes wind and rain actions to the applicable Indian codes. Because Kolkata is warm, humid and within reach of cyclone-season weather, the steel is hot-dip galvanised and the wind case is taken seriously rather than to a lighter inland figure.

Fabrication & Installation

Prefabricated, raised inside the building

The mast, the tension ring and the perimeter fittings are fabricated and hot-dip galvanised in the workshop, and the cone is cut as radial panels and welded into a single piece off-site. The central foundation is cast within the courtyard.

Erection is quick once the mast is up: the cone is spread out across the courtyard floor, lifted to the mast head, and tensioned down to the perimeter anchors until the peak pulls up true. Working inside an occupied building, access and lifting were the constraints, and the shade was completed in about two months.

The Result

A courtyard that works in any weather

The building gained a shaded, rain-protected courtyard with an almost clear floor and a striking single peak overhead — usable space recovered from what the weather had made marginal. The cone needs only periodic cleaning and a check of the mast and cable tensions.

What membrane material would a structure like this be built in?

The choice depends on span, climate and intended lifespan. PVC-coated polyester is the most cost-effective option, with a 10–15 year service life. PVDF-coated polyester adds a self-cleaning top layer and pushes that to 15–20 years. PTFE-coated fibreglass is a permanent, non-combustible membrane with a life measured in decades, and ETFE film is used where an ultra-light, highly transparent roof is needed.

Is the structure engineered to Indian standards?

Yes. Wind, rain and — where relevant — snow and seismic loads are analysed to the applicable IS codes, and the steelwork is designed to IS 800. The membrane is form-found so its stresses stay balanced in double curvature, and the foundations are sized against uplift and overturning rather than gravity alone — the governing case for a lightweight tensile roof.

What warranty and documentation come with the structure?

Up to a 10-year written warranty on the membrane, plus as-built drawings, original mill certificates for the membrane and steel, a structural stability certificate and an operation & maintenance manual on handover. An annual maintenance contract covering inspection and re-tensioning is optional.

How much maintenance does a tensile structure need?

Very little — a periodic wash to remove surface dirt, and an annual check of cable tension and bolt torque. PVDF and PTFE membranes are largely self-cleaning, so rain keeps them looking new. We can carry this out under an annual maintenance contract if you prefer.
