A commercial development’s shared space — the courtyard, plaza or forecourt where people arrive, park, walk and gather — only works year round if it is covered. At about 3,000 m² the brief is a large clear-span canopy that shades and shelters that space while keeping it open and daylit.

Ekra Decor delivered the structure as a turnkey job: survey and setting-out, 3D structural and membrane design, fabrication of the galvanised steel frame and the welded fabric, and installation and tensioning, over about 3,000 m² in roughly 55 days.

A large curved canopy is form-found so the sweep of the roof is also its structure: the membrane is pre-stressed into double curvature along and across the span, which keeps it taut under wind uplift and gives it a positive fall so rain runs off to defined edges rather than ponding. The column grid is set wide and to the perimeter so the space underneath stays open.

Ekra Decor designs the steelwork to IS 800 and checks the structure for wind, rain and seismic loading to the applicable Indian codes, with the foundations sized against the uplift that governs a large light roof. A translucent membrane keeps the covered space bright and cuts the solar heat, so it feels open rather than enclosed.

The steel is cut, welded and hot-dip galvanised in the workshop and the membrane is cut and high-frequency welded into panels off-site, so the canopy arrives as a set of prepared components. On site the crew casts the foundations, erects the frames and runs and tensions the membrane across the span.

Off-site fabrication is what keeps a 3,000 m² roof to a roughly 55-day programme — site time goes into assembly, not manufacture.

The site gained a large curved canopy over its shared space, keeping a courtyard, plaza or forecourt usable and bright through the summer and the monsoon. It is a low-maintenance structure — periodic cleaning and a routine inspection of the frame and tensions.
