The Brief
A sheltered, inviting shopfront approach
A retailer’s frontage is its advertisement. If the approach to the doors is exposed — hot in summer, wet in the monsoon — shoppers hurry past it, and the window displays suffer in the sun. The brief for a canopy like this is to cover the walkway between the storefronts so the entrance is comfortable and obviously open, without making the shopfront dark.
Ekra Decor’s scope covered the canopy end to end: survey of the frontage, 3D design of the membrane and its steel supports, fabrication, and installation and tensioning. With no figures in the archive, this page keeps the description general.
Design & Engineering
A canopy over a retail walkway
The design is driven by the frontage. The canopy has to follow the line of the shops, cover the full width of the walkway and its display margins, and land its supports where they will not block a doorway, a window or the pedestrian flow — usually a single column line along the kerb edge, with the roof reaching back to the building.
The membrane is form-found and pre-stressed into double curvature so it stays taut in wind and drains to the kerb side rather than back against the shopfront. Ekra Decor designs the steelwork to IS 800 and checks the canopy for wind and rain loading to the applicable Indian codes. A translucent fabric is chosen so the covered frontage stays bright and the window displays still read well from the street.
Fabrication & Installation
Prefabricated, installed with minimal disruption
The steel is fabricated and hot-dip galvanised in the workshop and the membrane is cut and welded into panels off-site, so the on-site programme is short: cast the edge footings, erect the frame along the frontage, run the membrane and tension it.
On a trading retail row the work is staged so the shops stay open — the footings and steel go in outside business hours where possible, and the frontage is handed back in sections as the canopy is completed.
The Result
A shopfront that works in any weather
The complex gained a covered, clearly marked entrance walkway: shoppers reach the doors out of the sun and rain, the window displays are protected, and the frontage looks complete. The canopy needs only occasional cleaning and a periodic check of its fixings.

What warranty and documentation come with the structure?
Up to a 10-year written warranty on the membrane, plus as-built drawings, original mill certificates for the membrane and steel, a structural stability certificate and an operation & maintenance manual on handover. An annual maintenance contract covering inspection and re-tensioning is optional.
How much maintenance does a tensile structure need?
Very little — a periodic wash to remove surface dirt, and an annual check of cable tension and bolt torque. PVDF and PTFE membranes are largely self-cleaning, so rain keeps them looking new. We can carry this out under an annual maintenance contract if you prefer.
