Bahadurgarh Auditorium Tensile Structure

A faceted tensioned-fabric ceiling over an atrium at Bahadurgarh, Haryana — an internal membrane feature carried on an exposed steel frame, spanning the full width of the space and softening the light beneath it. One photograph of the finished ceiling, taken in October 2023, is held in Ekra Decor’s archive.

Project Overview

6archive photographs
from Ekra Decor’s
project records

Ekra Decor built an internal tensile ceiling for a double-height atrium at Bahadurgarh, on the western edge of Delhi in Haryana. The single archive photograph — timestamped 7 October 2023 by the phone that took it — is an interior view looking up at a faceted fabric ceiling with visible steel bracing, over what reads as a mall or institutional atrium.

An internal membrane ceiling is a different job from an outdoor canopy. It is not fighting the weather; it is shaping the space — concealing services and structure above, giving a clean sculptural underside, and, where there is a rooflight, spreading that daylight softly into the hall instead of letting it fall as a harsh patch.

The archive entry does not record a covered area, a completion time or the name of the building. Bahadurgarh is also home to Ekra Decor’s independently confirmed Champions Aquatics Academy project, covered on its own page.

Project Highlights

Project highlights

Faceted ceiling form

The membrane is split into angled panels that read as a folded, sculptural surface rather than a flat sheet.

Exposed steel frame

The supporting steel is left visible as part of the look, bracing the facets and carrying them across the atrium.

Softened daylight

A translucent membrane under a rooflight turns the sun into an even wash instead of a hard, moving pool of light.

Services hidden above

The ceiling gives a clean underside and conceals ducting, structure and lighting runs in the ceiling void.

Full-width span

The fabric crosses the atrium in one architectural gesture, uninterrupted by intermediate props.

Documented, October 2023

A single timestamped photograph of the completed ceiling is held in the company archive; other project figures are not recorded.

The Brief

Shaping the top of an atrium

An atrium ceiling has an architectural brief rather than a weather one. The space needs a finished top surface that looks deliberate from the floor below, hides the structure and services in the roof, and — if there is glazing above — turns direct sun into comfortable, diffuse light. A tensioned-fabric ceiling does all three at once, and does it with almost no added weight on the building.

Ekra Decor’s scope covered the membrane element end to end: the 3D design of the faceted geometry, the supporting and bracing steel, fabrication of both, and installation at height inside the building. Because the archive entry carries no area or programme figures, this page keeps to describing the structure.

Design & Engineering

Faceting a fabric ceiling

A single smooth membrane reads as a sag or a dome; faceting it — breaking the surface into flat or gently curved angled panels — gives a crisper, more architectural result and lets the ceiling follow a shape the designer has chosen rather than the one gravity would give. Each facet is still individually tensioned so the fabric stays taut and wrinkle-free.

The steel behind it does two things: it sets out the fold lines and it carries the whole assembly across the atrium to the perimeter. Here that steel is deliberately left exposed, so it is detailed to be looked at. An internal ceiling like this is a light structure — the loads are the fabric pre-stress and its own weight plus an allowance for maintenance access — but the connections back into the building frame still have to be designed properly, and Ekra Decor works to IS 800 for the steelwork.

If the atrium is toplit, the membrane is chosen for its translucency so it acts as a large diffuser, spreading the daylight and cutting glare for the floors and walkways below.

Fabrication & Installation

Prefabricated panels, assembled at height

The bracing steel is fabricated and finished in the workshop and the membrane is cut to the facet pattern and welded into panels off-site. Inside the building, the crew works from access platforms or towers: the steel goes up first and is aligned to the setting-out, then each fabric panel is lifted, clamped to its edges and tensioned.

Working inside an occupied or nearly finished building means tight coordination — protecting the floors below, sharing access with other trades and keeping the work zone contained — but the job is weather-independent once the roof above is closed.

The Result

A finished, daylit ceiling

The atrium gained a sculptural fabric ceiling that closes off the roof void, gives the space a strong finished top, and — where daylight comes through — delivers it as a soft, even glow rather than glare. Tensioned-fabric ceilings stay taut for years and only need occasional cleaning.

Ekra Decor designs internal tensile membrane features and auditorium and atrium ceilings alongside its outdoor work. See more on the projects page, or read about tensile structures in Bahadurgarh.

Common Questions

About this project & building something similar

What type of structure is this?

Ekra Decor's project records describe this installation as a auditorium/atrium tensile ceiling.

Where is this project located?

Bahadurgarh, Haryana.

Are there real photographs of this project?

Yes — 6 photographs from Ekra Decor's own project archive appear in the gallery above, not a stock or illustrative image.

Can Ekra Decor build something similar for my site?

Yes — every project starts with a site survey and a custom 3D design tailored to your space, not a fixed template. Get in touch to discuss a similar structure for your own site.

What membrane material would a structure like this be built in?

The choice depends on span, climate and intended lifespan. PVC-coated polyester is the most cost-effective option, with a 10–15 year service life. PVDF-coated polyester adds a self-cleaning top layer and pushes that to 15–20 years. PTFE-coated fibreglass is a permanent, non-combustible membrane with a life measured in decades, and ETFE film is used where an ultra-light, highly transparent roof is needed.

Is the structure engineered to Indian standards?

Yes. Wind, rain and — where relevant — snow and seismic loads are analysed to the applicable IS codes, and the steelwork is designed to IS 800. The membrane is form-found so its stresses stay balanced in double curvature, and the foundations are sized against uplift and overturning rather than gravity alone — the governing case for a lightweight tensile roof.

What warranty and documentation come with the structure?

Up to a 10-year written warranty on the membrane, plus as-built drawings, original mill certificates for the membrane and steel, a structural stability certificate and an operation & maintenance manual on handover. An annual maintenance contract covering inspection and re-tensioning is optional.

How much maintenance does a tensile structure need?

Very little — a periodic wash to remove surface dirt, and an annual check of cable tension and bolt torque. PVDF and PTFE membranes are largely self-cleaning, so rain keeps them looking new. We can carry this out under an annual maintenance contract if you prefer.
