Ekra Decor built a tensile canopy for Sehwag International School, a CBSE day-cum-boarding school founded by cricketer Virender Sehwag on a 23-acre eco-friendly campus at Jhajjar, on the outskirts of Gurgaon, Haryana.

The school is built around a broad sports programme — athletics, basketball, badminton, cricket, equestrian, football, golf, lawn tennis, table tennis, squash and an all-weather swimming pool — the kind of campus that needs several weather-protected outdoor spaces. At about 500 m², this canopy is a focused, single-purpose cover: one practice court, a coaching area, or a shaded assembly and waiting space beside the sports facilities.

The Brief

A focused piece of shade for a sports campus

A campus with a serious sports programme needs shaded, sheltered spots around its facilities — somewhere to run a coaching session out of the sun, for a team to wait, or for a group to assemble before heading out to the pitches. That is a small, specific requirement, and a 500 m² canopy answers it precisely without over-building.

Ekra Decor delivered it as a complete job: survey, 3D structural and membrane design, fabrication of the galvanised frame and the fabric, and installation and tensioning, over about 500 m² in roughly 32 days.

Design & Engineering

A compact canopy, properly engineered

At this scale the structure is light, but the engineering is the same as for a larger roof. The membrane is form-found so it sits in double curvature and stays taut, carried on a slim galvanised steel frame with the columns kept to the perimeter of the covered area.

Wind uplift is the governing load on a small, low canopy, and on a school site there is an added allowance for the structure being leaned on or played near. Ekra Decor designs the steelwork to IS 800, checks the canopy for wind to the applicable Indian codes, and sizes the pad foundations for uplift and overturning. A translucent membrane keeps the covered space bright and cool.

Fabrication & Installation

Prefabricated, installed in about a month

The frame is welded and hot-dip galvanised in the workshop and the membrane is cut and welded to pattern off-site, so the canopy arrives ready to erect. On site the crew casts the pad foundations, stands the frame and tensions the membrane — a short, contained sequence.

On a running campus the work is fenced off and timed around the school day, and the space is handed back finished in about 32 days.

The Result

Shade where the sport happens

The school gained a compact covered space beside its sports facilities — useful for coaching, waiting or assembly, out of the Haryana sun and the rain. It is essentially maintenance-free apart from cleaning and a periodic tension check.

What membrane material would a structure like this be built in?

The choice depends on span, climate and intended lifespan. PVC-coated polyester is the most cost-effective option, with a 10–15 year service life. PVDF-coated polyester adds a self-cleaning top layer and pushes that to 15–20 years. PTFE-coated fibreglass is a permanent, non-combustible membrane with a life measured in decades, and ETFE film is used where an ultra-light, highly transparent roof is needed.

What warranty and documentation come with the structure?

Up to a 10-year written warranty on the membrane, plus as-built drawings, original mill certificates for the membrane and steel, a structural stability certificate and an operation & maintenance manual on handover. An annual maintenance contract covering inspection and re-tensioning is optional.

How much maintenance does a tensile structure need?

Very little — a periodic wash to remove surface dirt, and an annual check of cable tension and bolt torque. PVDF and PTFE membranes are largely self-cleaning, so rain keeps them looking new. We can carry this out under an annual maintenance contract if you prefer.
