G.D. Goenka School, Vasant Kunj Tensile Structure
A tensile structure at G.D. Goenka Public School, Vasant Kunj — about 1,500 m² of tensioned fabric cover over a shared campus space at the group’s flagship Delhi school, on a galvanised steel frame. Ekra Decor built it in about six weeks.

Project Overview
from Ekra Decor’s
project records
Ekra Decor built a tensile canopy for G.D. Goenka Public School, Vasant Kunj — the flagship campus of the G.D. Goenka school group, founded in 1994, on a 3.82-acre site in Sector B, Vasant Kunj, South Delhi.
On a compact urban campus, a covered shared space earns its area many times over: an assembly ground that doubles as a games court and an event space, a dining area, a covered link. Roofing it with a tensile canopy makes it a genuine all-weather facility — usable through the Delhi summer and the monsoon — without the cost or the footprint of an enclosed hall.
The archive records about 1,500 m² and a roughly six-week build, and describes the structure as covering a shared campus space without naming it specifically. It is one of several G.D. Goenka projects in Ekra Decor’s records.
Project Highlights
Project highlights
Flagship-campus project
Built for the group’s original Vasant Kunj school on a compact 3.82-acre urban site.
A multi-use covered space
About 1,500 m² that can serve as assembly ground, games court and event space in turn.
All-weather, no hall
The canopy delivers year-round use at a fraction of the cost and footprint of a built hall.
Delivered in about six weeks
A roughly 1.5-month programme on a running city campus.
Column-free floor
The roof spans to the perimeter, so the whole space stays flexible.
One of several G.D. Goenka projects
Ekra Decor’s records include multiple structures for the school group.
The Brief
One space, many uses
Space is tight on an urban school campus, so the outdoor areas have to work hard — the same ground is assembly in the morning, a games court in the afternoon and an event space in the evening. That only holds up if the space is covered; otherwise it is lost to the summer sun and the monsoon for months at a time.
Ekra Decor delivered the canopy as a turnkey job: survey and setting-out, 3D structural and membrane design, fabrication of the galvanised steel frame and the welded fabric, and installation and tensioning, over about 1,500 m² in roughly six weeks.
Design & Engineering
A flexible clear-span canopy
A multi-use space needs a completely clear floor, so the canopy is designed as a clear span — membrane and supporting steel crossing the whole area to columns set outside it — with the clear height set high enough for court sports and events beneath.
The membrane is form-found in 3D and pre-stressed into double curvature, which keeps a lightweight roof stable under the wind uplift that governs it and drains the monsoon to defined points. Ekra Decor designs the steelwork to IS 800 and checks the structure for wind, rain and seismic loading to the applicable Indian codes, with the foundations sized against uplift. On a constrained urban site, the column positions are also set to keep circulation and existing services clear.
A translucent fabric keeps the space bright enough to use as a daytime environment, not just a shelter.
Fabrication & Installation
Fabricated off-site, built around the school
The steel is cut, welded and hot-dip galvanised in the workshop and the membrane is cut and high-frequency welded into panels off-site, so on-site work is limited to casting the foundations, erecting the frame and running and tensioning the membrane.
On a running city campus with limited access, deliveries and lifts are planned tightly around the school day, and the space is handed back as a finished, tensioned canopy in about six weeks.
The Result
An all-weather heart to the campus
The school gained a covered central space that carries assembly, sport and events through every season — a lot of usable facility for the area and the budget. It needs only periodic cleaning and a routine check of the frame and cable tensions.
Ekra Decor builds assembly and multi-use canopies for schools across Delhi-NCR and beyond. See more finished work on the projects page, or read about tensile structures in Delhi.

Common Questions
About this project & building something similar
Where is this project located?
Vasant Kunj, New Delhi.
How large is the covered area?
1,500 m², per Ekra Decor's project records.
How long did this project take to build?
≈1.5 months from start to finish, per Ekra Decor's project records — in line with the standard 10 to 15 day fabrication and 3 to 7 day on-site installation timeline used across most projects.
Who was this project built for?
G.D. Goenka Public School.
Are there real photographs of this project?
Yes — 1 photograph from Ekra Decor's own project archive appear in the gallery above, not a stock or illustrative image.
Can Ekra Decor build something similar for my site?
Yes — every project starts with a site survey and a custom 3D design tailored to your space, not a fixed template. Get in touch to discuss a similar structure for your own site.
What membrane material would a structure like this be built in?
The choice depends on span, climate and intended lifespan. PVC-coated polyester is the most cost-effective option, with a 10–15 year service life. PVDF-coated polyester adds a self-cleaning top layer and pushes that to 15–20 years. PTFE-coated fibreglass is a permanent, non-combustible membrane with a life measured in decades, and ETFE film is used where an ultra-light, highly transparent roof is needed.
Is the structure engineered to Indian standards?
Yes. Wind, rain and — where relevant — snow and seismic loads are analysed to the applicable IS codes, and the steelwork is designed to IS 800. The membrane is form-found so its stresses stay balanced in double curvature, and the foundations are sized against uplift and overturning rather than gravity alone — the governing case for a lightweight tensile roof.
What warranty and documentation come with the structure?
Up to a 10-year written warranty on the membrane, plus as-built drawings, original mill certificates for the membrane and steel, a structural stability certificate and an operation & maintenance manual on handover. An annual maintenance contract covering inspection and re-tensioning is optional.
How much maintenance does a tensile structure need?
Very little — a periodic wash to remove surface dirt, and an annual check of cable tension and bolt torque. PVDF and PTFE membranes are largely self-cleaning, so rain keeps them looking new. We can carry this out under an annual maintenance contract if you prefer.
