Folding Car Parking Shed

A car shed that folds back when you do not need it. The fabric roof runs on a track and gathers into folds at one end, by hand or by motor, so the drive is open on a clear day and covered in sun and rain. Most installed projects fall between ₹280 and ₹2,500 per sq ft, plus GST.

How it works

A car shed that folds back

A folding car parking shed is a fabric roof on a moving frame. Pull it out and the car is covered; push it back and the drive is open again.

The roof is a series of arched steel or aluminium hoops joined by a coated fabric. The hoops run on wheels or rollers along a track on each side. As the shed opens, the hoops close up and the fabric between them gathers into folds, so the whole shed stacks into a short bundle at one end. As it closes, the hoops spread out and the fabric pulls taut again.

That makes it a good fit where a fixed roof would be in the way: a drive that has to stay open for deliveries or guests, a front elevation you do not want permanently covered, or a showroom forecourt that needs cover at night and an open display by day.

Folding or fixed?

When a folding shed makes sense

A fixed tensile shed is still the better answer for most car parks. A folding one earns its place in particular situations.

If the space never needs to be open, a fixed shed costs less over its life. See car parking shed designs for home and car parking sheds for larger sites.

Where it is used

Where a folding car shed fits

The common thread is a space that should be covered some of the time and open the rest.

Home drive & porch

Cover the car in sun and rain, then fold the shed back so the front of the house and the drive are open again.

Showrooms & dealerships

Cars stay covered overnight and in bad weather, and the forecourt opens up for display during the day.

Guest & visitor parking

Shade for visitor bays at offices, clinics and hotels that sometimes need the space clear for events or deliveries.

Farmhouses & villas

A cover for cars, a tractor or a utility vehicle that can be opened up for the occasional large gathering.

Shared or narrow drives

Where a fixed column or roof would block a gate, a turning vehicle or a neighbour’s access.

Seasonal cover

Cover through the summer and the monsoon, folded back through the mild months.

Options

What you choose when ordering

Most of these are settled at the site survey.

  • Manual or motorised — a manual shed is pushed or pulled along its track. A motorised one runs from a switch or remote, which helps on longer runs.
  • Fabric — PVC-coated polyester for most homes, or a PVDF-finished fabric for longer life and less dust pick-up on a busy road.
  • Colour — white and off-white keep the car cooler underneath; darker shades hide dust.
  • Length and width — sized to the number of cars, with clearance for doors to open and for a taller SUV.
  • Locking — a lock or anchor point at the closed and open positions, so the shed cannot roll in the wind.

Folding Fabric Roofs, Moving

The folding action is easier to understand moving than in a photograph. These clips show the same mechanism at different sizes.

The folding mechanism a car shed uses: the fabric gathers into neat folds as the frame runs back. Shown here over a patio.
On a larger span the fabric folds into a concertina as the bays draw back, then re-tensions when it closes.
Fully open, the folded bays park together at one end. How much room that stack needs is part of the design.
Before you order

What to check on site

Getting these right is what keeps a folding shed running smoothly.

  • A level track — the rails need a level, solid base along their full length. A sloping or broken drive is levelled first.
  • Room to stack — folded, the shed still takes up a short length at one end. Plan where that bundle sits so it does not block a gate or a door.
  • The gate — check sliding and swinging gates against the track and the stacked shed before the design is fixed.
  • Drainage — closed, the roof sheds a lot of water. Decide where it goes, ideally to an existing drain.
  • Power — a motorised shed needs a power point at the drive end.

What a folding car parking shed costs

Most installed projects fall between ₹280 and ₹2,500 per sq ft, plus GST. A moving shed sits higher in that range than a fixed one of the same size.

Common Questions

Folding car parking shed FAQ

What people ask before choosing a folding shed over a fixed one.

A fabric car shed on a moving frame. Arched hoops run along a track on each side, and the fabric between them folds up as the shed opens, so it stacks at one end and leaves the drive clear. Pulled out again, it covers the car.

Most installed projects fall between ₹280 and ₹2,500 per sq ft, plus GST. A folding shed sits towards the higher end compared with a fixed shed, and the figure depends on the number of cars, the length of the run, manual or motorised operation and the base work needed for the track.

Either. Shorter sheds over one or two cars are usually pushed or pulled by hand. Longer runs, or sheds opened every day, are easier with a motor run from a switch or remote.

It is designed to be locked at the closed and open positions so it cannot roll. In a storm it should be locked, and the operating guide says which position to leave it in. A fixed shed is the better choice on a very exposed site.

If the drive or the front of the house needs to be open some of the time, folding. If the parking is always covered, a fixed shed costs less over its life and needs less upkeep. See our car parking shed designs for home.

Keep the track clear of stones and debris, check the wheels and the lock points a few times a year, and wash the fabric once or twice a year. A motorised shed also needs its drive checked during the service visit.
