Manual or Motorised: Choosing a Retractable Roof
Both open and close the same space. What separates them is who operates the roof, how far the panels travel, and whether there is power at the opening.

A retractable roof earns its keep on the days you change your mind about the weather. The decision that matters is not the fabric or the colour: it is whether the roof is driven by a motor or by hand. That one choice changes the track, the frame, the electrical work and how the space gets used day to day.
What actually differs

Manual
A hand-operated roof runs on a chain drive with a rack and pinion, steel bearing rollers and an MS C-channel track. There is a manual lock at the closed position and a rubber buffer at the end stop. Nothing needs power, and there is no motor to service later.

Motorised
A motorised roof uses a tubular motor with a remote. The drive rib is pulled along concealed belts inside an extruded aluminium frame that doubles as the motor housing, and stainless steel spacer cables carry the remaining ribs closed or concertina them back when opening.
Start with how often it will be opened
A roof that moves twice a month and a roof that moves twice a day are different products. For a home terrace opened on pleasant evenings, a manual roof is simple and there is less to go wrong. For a restaurant, banquet lawn or hotel courtyard where staff open and close it daily, and often in a hurry when the weather turns, a motorised roof stops being a luxury.
Ask who will actually operate it. If the answer is guests, elderly family members or whichever staff member is nearest, a remote is worth more than the saving on a manual system.
Then look at the span and the shape of the space
Area alone is misleading. What matters is how far the panels travel. A roof 30 ft wide and 20 ft deep and one 60 ft long and 10 ft deep can cover the same area, but the second pulls the panels twice as far, and every extra foot of travel is felt by whoever is pulling the chain.
Long, narrow openings tend towards motorised for that reason, even when the area looks modest. Wide, shallow openings stay comfortable by hand for longer.
Power decides more than people expect
A motorised roof needs a supply at the motor point, and that is usually the client's scope rather than ours. On an existing terrace with no point nearby, the wiring can cost more disruption than the motor itself: chases cut through finished walls, or a surface conduit run that has to be routed sensibly. Decide this before the frame is fabricated, not after.
The roofing material pulls the answer one way
Rigid polycarbonate panels weigh more than a folding fabric membrane, so a polycarbonate roof reaches the practical limit of hand operation sooner. Fabric folds back on itself and is lighter to move, which keeps manual comfortable over a slightly larger opening. What we ask before quoting
- The size of the opening, as length by width in feet, not just the area.
- Whether the roof sits on a terrace, a courtyard, a lawn or between existing walls.
- What it is fixed to: RCC columns, an existing structure, or whether it must stand on its own.
- Whether there is a power point near the opening.
- How often the roof will be opened, and by whom.
- Whether you want daylight through the roof, or shade under it.
Two or three photographs and a short video of the area answer more of these than a long phone call, which is why we ask for them first.
Common questions
Can a manual roof be motorised later?
Sometimes, but it is not a simple retrofit. The track, drive and frame differ between the two systems, so converting usually means replacing more than the motor. If motorised is likely within a couple of years, it is cheaper to build it that way now.
Does a motorised roof still work in a power cut?
It stays where it is. Plan for that: leave the roof closed when a storm is forecast, and ask about manual override options at the time of ordering rather than afterwards.
Is a retractable roof waterproof when closed?
A closed membrane roof is designed to shed water, with gaskets at the joints and a fall for drainage. It is weather cover, not a sealed structure, and it needs somewhere for the water to go.
How long does installation take?
It depends on span, site access and how much steel is involved. We give a lead time in writing with the quotation, counted from the approval of the final drawings rather than from the enquiry.
