What Determines the Price of Tensile Fabric
Tensile “fabric” is not a commodity cloth sold by the metre — it is an engineered coated membrane, specified by base cloth, coating system, weight class, finish and roll width. This is what moves the membrane rate on a project, and why a price per square foot or per metre for the fabric alone rarely means anything on its own.

Tensile fabric is not a cloth sold by the metre
A tensile membrane is an engineered structural material, not dress fabric. It is specified by base cloth, coating system, weight and strength class, surface finish, roll width and the quantity ordered — and a quoted rate only means something once those are fixed. On top of that, the fabric on a finished canopy is not the roll: it is patterned, cut, welded and edged, and an awkward shape wastes material and adds welding.
It is a minority of the project cost
On most tensile structures the membrane is a quarter to a third of the total. The larger share is steel, foundations and installation. The membrane share is higher on a small simple shade and lower on a large steel-heavy roof. See the tensile structure cost guide for the whole picture.
The coating family sets the band
PVC-coated polyester is the base. A PVDF lacquer is a modest uplift for a longer life. PTFE-coated glass is a large step up — a different base cloth, a fluoropolymer coating, slower welding and a non-combustible fire class. ETFE is a film, priced differently again. Then the weight class
Within a coating family, a higher weight (strength) class uses more yarn and coating and costs more per square metre. But the right weight is set by the span and the pre-stress, not chosen for economy: an under-specified membrane fails early and an over-specified one wastes money and adds dead load.
What moves the membrane line on a quote
Eight things decide where the fabric line lands. The material is only the first of them.
Coating family
EffectPVC is the base; PVDF-lacquered PVC is a modest uplift; PTFE-coated glass can roughly double the fabric line; ETFE is a film system, priced separately.

Weight / strength class
EffectRoughly Type I to V, about 600 to 1450 g/m². Heavier cloth for larger spans and higher pre-stress costs more per square metre.

Surface finish

Roll width & nesting
EffectMembrane comes in fixed roll widths (about 2.5 to 3.2 m). A geometry that nests cleanly uses less fabric and less welding; an awkward shape wastes both.

Fabrication content
EffectThe fabric line includes patterning, cutting, high-frequency or hot-wedge welding, keder and edge details, corner plates and cable pockets.
NoteOn a compound-curved shape this is a large share of the line.
Order quantity
EffectA small one-off order carries a minimum; larger areas attract better material rates.

Why a rate for the fabric alone rarely helps
People ask for a price per square foot or per running metre. Both are real numbers in the supply chain — but neither is an installed price for your canopy.
“Per running metre” is a roll price
Mills sell membrane on rolls and can quote a per-metre material rate. It excludes patterning, cutting, welding, edge and corner details, and the wastage a shape adds — which together can be 20 to 40% on top.
Same area, very different fabric line
A flat PVC cantilever and a double-curved PTFE canopy of the same plan area can differ by a wide margin on the membrane line alone — different material, different weld length, different wastage.
The installed quote is per project
Ekra Decor quotes the whole structure and itemises the membrane as one line, sized from the CAD patterning — not as a rate card.
What a useful figure needs
The coating family, the weight class, the covered area and the shape. With those four, the fabric line can be estimated properly; without them, any number is a guess.
Where a weight number sits
“900 GSM” (900 g/m²) is a weight class for a PVC/polyester membrane, not a price. It tells you roughly how strong the cloth is and what spans it suits. The same weight in a PVDF or PTFE product is a different price entirely.

Tensile fabric price FAQ
The questions people ask about what tensile fabric costs and how it is priced.
There is no single rate. The membrane is priced from its coating family (PVC-coated polyester, PVDF-lacquered PVC, PTFE-coated glass or ETFE film), its weight and strength class, its finish, the roll width and how efficiently the canopy shape nests, the fabrication content of cutting, welding and edge details, and the order quantity. It is quoted as one itemised line inside a project quote, not sold by the metre.
“900 GSM” is a weight class, not a price. Around 900 to 1050 g/m² is a common Type III band for medium-to-large PVC canopies. A 900 g/m² PVC membrane, the same weight in PVDF-lacquered PVC, and a comparable PTFE-coated glass product are three very different prices. The installed rate also adds cutting, welding, edge details and wastage on top of the roll cost, so a per-square-foot figure only means something once the material, area and shape are fixed.
Mills supply the membrane on rolls and can quote a per-running-metre rate for material only. That is not an installed price. It excludes patterning, cutting, high-frequency or hot-wedge welding, edge and corner details, and the roughly 20 to 40 percent wastage that an awkward geometry can add. For a canopy you want an installed quote against a layout.

PTFE-coated glass uses a woven glass base and a fluoropolymer coating, is slower and more exacting to weld, and carries a longer design life and a non-combustible fire class. It can roughly double the fabric line versus PVC. A PVDF finish on PVC is a small uplift for a longer life without the full PTFE cost.
Per square metre, broadly yes, because a higher weight class uses more yarn and coating. But the right weight is set by the span and the pre-stress, not chosen for economy. An under-specified membrane fails early, and an over-specified one wastes money and adds dead load.
